I have the 1.6 petrol Focus [100bhp] and my brother has an ASTRA SRi VVT 1.8 [140bhp]

We get about the same fuel economy (34-35 town, 40 motorway)

Comparably I think the bigger 1.8 focus and 2.0 focus get the same sort of economy as the 1.6

There's probably a load more options, but they're the ones I have first hand experience of.

Perhaps the 2.0 Turbo in the Leon FR or Golf GTi would give a similar MPG figure but with a healthy improvement in performance.

You seem a bit vague about what you want though. The cars above will give a similar MPG figure if driven gently, but have the ability to go through fuel much quicker if you're driving it hard everywhere.

Mpg is directly proportional to pedal travel. Max mpg based on vehicle and where you're driving

E.g jazz at 100% is 38mpg but realistic 48 or Max 60+.

Civic type r at 100% maybe 5-10mpg. Realistic 30mpg and Max 40.

Could drive the jazz at 80% of its limit but still get 45mpg but travelling much quicker than the type r.

Just my 2p

I seem to remember a top gear test where a Prius was caned around the track as fast as the driver was able to go. An M3 followed it round probably only driving at 50% of capability. The M3 achieved better mpg in the test.

I used to own a Civic 1.8 petrol and got 300 miles to a tank. It could do a lot more but it was so boring that I found myself driving spiritedly most of the time to get something out of it and had to have my foot to the floor for a long time to overtake. I did downshift but it still wasn't enough.

Anyway, I now own a 130i and I get roughly the same distance to a tank (granted it is 55 litres rather than Civics 50 litre) but only because I don't need to push it even half as hard to have fun.

Now the problem is, although I'm getting good numbers like this with the 130i, it costing more in insurance. The reason for this is not known though. It is the big engine and power? Or is it because a lot of them have been recording in accidents?

The only way for you to know whether big power and/or engine makes a difference is to run some insurance quotes and check online for "real world mpg" figures.
