how does it feel (to bibs)
Discussion
if you're on duty (on overtime) in your speed van, and are catching a considerable number of people speeding, knowing that all the lot are going to get done. You see chavs (non prob), prats in company cars haring along (no prob either) but also pensioners, mothers with their kids (don't play the 'speed kills' card) etc. Do you feel joyous at a job well done, or a little sad - even guilty - perhaps?
interested.
interested.
'Speed Kills'...
Oh. sorry, I wasn't supposed to state that, was I?
Seriously now..how do I feel? How do most BiB feel. I would suggest it's a case of the law is there and we all know it, whether we like it or agree with it or not. If we break it, we know the consequences and that's that...
In addition to all those mothers, vicars etc that get done for speeding...there are also off duty coppers and their loved ones that get 'pegged' by speed cameras and they have to cough up too....we're all in the same boat nowadays...no funny handshakes for the lads...

how do you actually feel sat in your van though.
another question might be, how would your superior officer feel if you didn't actually catch anyone and you'd been sat there for 8 hours?
Don't feel anything of note.....Always nice to get the high speeders though...
As for superiors....the BiB doesn't get a bollocking for not getting any speeders....On the contrary..if there are no speeders, for a number of weeks, the van will no longer be used in that area...

That's odd because the repeated claim is speed traps go where it is dangerous unsafe and a high pattern of accidents....
Of course your idea of "where there are speeders" would explain why Norfolk's mob spend all their time on the A11 (the only decent road in Norfolk) and more or less ignore the suicidally dangerous roads in North Norfolk.

Whys that then? Theyre the safest group outa the lot!
I kind of agree with st
on this one...under a certain definition. If you are manning a laser van on a motorway or DC NSL on a clear blue sky day with very little traffic around, then
your laser van quite honestly as it wont catch someone driving dangerously at speed it will just catch them speeding. If they are doing 95 and driving excellently otherwise then they are not really causing a problem. If however they are driving at 95 and undertaking, pushing in, driving too close then what is the speeding ticket goign to tell them? "My driving is excellent but I had better watch myt speed" basically. So they will probably drive at 70/80ish and drive like a
until they cause an accident, which the police wont give a s
t about because insurance will deal with it
But the definiition of major speeders (for example 90 in a small urban packed housing estate or near a school) I do agree with. That is using speeding as a dangerous weapon.
However you dont really see many scameras near or around schools now do you....
However if you consider a high speed
I don't do camera van work anymore, as it's been "civilianised" in our Force now.
When I did do it, I'd arrive at work, do all the checks, have a leisurely drive out to (usually) a couple of sites (because one would always be unuseable die to parked vehicles etc
), set up, have a walk through to make sure the signs etc were visible, adjust them so they were, recheck, readjust, recheck, get in the van, have a brew, set up the camera, remember to switch the radio on, get back in the back, remember my paper/book, get back in the back, think "Now, where was I?", start from scratch again with all the alignment checks, then point the thing at people over the speed limit, but using my discretion...
Then of course I get a meal break, plus a couple of "comfort breaks", and I had to leave myself enough time to get back to the nick, make sure the van was clean and tidy, submit all the relevant forms (which can take a while, as I have to write s l o w l y if anyone else is to have a chance of reading it).
Now I'll probably get flamed for taking the p
ss on rest day rate. Some people are never happy...
So all in all, I feel OK about it - only ever pinged "high" speeders, and my preferred site was outside a primary school.

Would agree with Dibble on this one.
And I am firmly of the opinion there should be a permanent camera outside every school as kids have a habit of dashing out from inconceiveably small gaps.
The only times I have been involved with hand helds and other speed equipment was when specifically tasked as locals have complained about excessive speed in 'their' built up areas.
Funnily enough, most of those caught were locals.

And I am firmly of the opinion that road safety should be taught to ALL road users - including pedestrians, including kids - what happened to the Tufty Club? The Green Cross Code adverts?
By all means put a camera outside the school, but the priority should be to teach kids NOT to run out in the road. Show them pictures of the possible results - you've probably dealt with a few - and they might think twice. Have crossing patrols, and pedestrian crossings with central refuges; engineer the roads so they are safer, don't ping the motorist just because you can and it's the option that generates the most cash.

While Dibble's reminiscences did bring a smile to my face
i have to disagree with you slightly Silverback on one point. Its agreed (well i hope it is by now!) that most accidents happen at below the speed limits, so there'd be absolutely no point in putting a speed camera outside of a school, itd acheive ZERO.
Itd also acheive ZERO in the way of revenue generation capability...under the speed limits (majority) no pics, no fines, no dammed point!
So they stick the big yellow buggers up in places they KNOW us naughty chappies and chappie-esses?? will be a bit liberal with the fun pedal.
Clearly there's something rotten in Denmark, and im not talking about the contents of Dibble's Salmon sandwiches...

Why?
Well, if I'm there manning a speed gun...I think doing someone for 30+mph over the limit is better than 10%+4mph (as it is in my force)

I see your point delta, and I don't particularly like camera's. Well, not in places they simply are not required.
My reasoning behind putting them at every school is that they do make people check their speed, especially if people know they are there. I am not talking about the jamming on of brakes because they are surprised at the camera's presence but the fact that people will be going slow enough past a school.
I suppose having been to a couple of RTA's at those types of locations it makes you think, I agree, sometimes there is nothing that can be done to avoid something happening, but a 20mph limit for a 200m stretch with a camera, I think, is a good idea. People will know it is there, and at 20mph you cannot guarantee that nothing will happen, but if numpty child runs out, there is a better chance that you can react. (Obviously I don't mean YOU can react delta, I state it in the generic sense).
Random trivia here. Did you know that the black bit across the middle of a lollipop lady (aarg politically correct police.....Lolipop 'person') was to mark down the registration of an 'offending' car.
