How small will we go in these cars?

Apparently Alfa has announced some updates to their two-car line-up:

http://www.socialnetwall.alfaromeo.com/c/alfa-rome...

What struck me most was the 0.9 Turbo TwinAir 105 HP, that's a 900cc two-cylinder turbo charged engine, up 20hp or nearly 25% in power.
Has anybody driven the TwinAir vehicles (Fiat 500?), how are these engines? Woefully underpowered or quite alright?
I've only driven the diesels and found both quite adequate, but I'm curious as to how a sub-litre plus-hundredhorsepower engine would drive?

Probably it's madly efficient, but how about driving enjoyment?

And is it suitable for what is a quite upmarket small car?

I test drove both the fiat 500 twinair and the mito twinairs last year. They both hustle along pretty nicely, the mito is not that much heavier than the 500 so the bigger body doesnt blunt performance too much (they are not fast, but reasonably brisk) The 500 is a bit of a giggle to be honest - making a bit of a farty noise as it revs (my kids thought it was hilarious). The mito is a little more subdued due to more soundproofing I expect. but still has some of the same playful character whilst being a bit more grown up. The last years mito I drove was a bit floaty while on a backroad I knew well (compared to my 2002 forester on the same road) I have no idea if damping has been tweaked on the current model year

Twinair Mito has been out for a while now. Mainly aimed at younger drivers with a huge stereo!

Since 2011 apparently, but they've just upped the power significantly (almost 25%), which was my reason for starting this thread as a 105bhp small economical car sounds interesting.

The 105bhp is massively better than the old engine. I mean in a different league

Small turbo charged engines seems to be the way forward at the moment. Decent fuel economy, low emmissions and tax and not a great drop off in performance compared to their NA brothers.

Compare a 100bhp Focus 1.0 ecoboost to a 100bhp 1.6 and the performance figures are very similar but you get better mpg, lower tax and emmissions.

Didn't someone here test drive a twin air 500 and was shocked how thirsty and unrefined it was?

In fairness a 0.9L with 105bhp won't be too bad, obviously I doubt you'll be breaking any speed records but for people who just want a trundle round town it could suit quite well providing it's efficient (which I assume it will be).

Amazing engine and package. Love to put one in a Mk1 MX5.

Maybe, but it would be fun, esp in a Mk1 with their thirsty, asthmatic engines. wink

There are numerous stories about how the TwinAir engine doesn't deliver on its MPG promises. Although a number of the reports/comments I've read suggest that it's because the engine loves to rev and its drivers are enjoying that characteristic.

Me too. Shame they never made a ~400-500cc 4 stroke.
