Recently I popped round to visit a mate of mine who plays with old hot rods, he had a 1950s Chevy 3100 engine block boiling away in an oil drum of molasses solution. Did the job extremely well apparently but gave off a foul smell that would upset the neighbours (if he had any).

I keep meaning to try out molasses. I've used citric acid with good results, and usually have an electroltyic tub with something in it. I've heard mixing citric acid in with wallpaper paste allows it to be applied to a panel surface where it's not practical to soak it, but I haven't tried it.
