noisy exhaust at low revs on 996 C4 2003

Bad rattling sound on drivers side exhaust at low revs.

Any ideas? Am pondering taking to Leicester OPC as have heard they charge indie rates for the elderly models

Could be a loose heat shield or a loose baffle internal to the exhaust box. The former is relatively easily fixed, the latter requires the box to be cut open and welded, or a new exhaust box.

My experience of the cheap rates at OPC for the 996 is cheaper fixed price servicing, but any work not on the fixed schedule still works out much more expensive than a good indie.

Loose baffle. Had the same with my C4S. Took it to local garage as i can bet pinch of salt the bolts will be seized on so let them deal with it and its a relatively easy job for a good garage.

local indie suggesting if it's baffles, then a Dansk (not sure if that's how it's spelt)sport box for around £600 plus VAT and labour.

If you're looking to change the silencers, also check-out Gert Carnewal's newly re-christened 'GT Exhaust' (he used to call them RSRs from memory) for the 996. This system has had a great reputation for many years.

I have the equivalent 997.2 version on my car that sounds great and was very good value. The quality of the welding was also top-notch, so I can certainly vouch for the quality of the product. There's a sound clip on Gert's site of the 996 version.
