I took 'full use of the lane' yesterday in Paisley, when a private hire taxi came from behind blowing his horn and passing me at what I can only guess some illegal speed as I was rattling along at 29mph. As he passed he opened his passenger window and gave me a mouthful of severe verbal. Shame he didn't have the bottle to stop and have a chat at the junction as I was in no mood to take prisoners

Why on earth is everyone taking it so seriously?

Quite apart from everything else, as long as cyclists are still being killed on London's roads because they're daft enough to try ride up the side of a lorry turning left, the way in which cyclists are being treated at the moment clearly isn't the way to go either.

Different people respond to different messages. Just because this one doesn't make you respond in the desired fashion, it doesn't mean someone else watching it might not take a message from it.
