Looking at the merits of a SUV type car to let the wife kill and children ruin.

I really like the newer Hyundai cars... and have had an IX35 and I30 on pool at work.

For what they are, is the Tucson good value? I can get a 2006 diesel with sensible miles for around £2500. They seem to fit the bill, utilitarian rather than Chelsea. Has anyone experience of running one?

Any help and knowledge appreciated.

Friend has one, regularly ferries wife and kid to the Alps in it, It's an absolute barge to drive but seems pretty solid. Proper diff locks and everything so is great in the snow/mud.

He did spin it once though trying to drift it, however....

If you are referring to the 4x4 then I can certainly say it was a good buy for my employer. She had an old Nissan Terrano which was worth £500 but needed a new gearbox (£5000)!

Long story short, I asked the telegraph car guru 'Honest John', (don't know how you feel about his advice), but he reommended it. I went for the GSi 2.0 petrol on a '05 plate. Had it 3 plus years and absolutely nothing has gone wrong with it. Rare as hen's teeth as people hang on to them. Hope this is of use to you.

2006 are looking more like £5-6k from traders.

Horrendously slow, relatively poor fuel economy, ugly and basic. Great work horse but I wouldn't want to drive it everyday.

My father has had his from new for 7 years. Minor fault (cheap to fix) with the gear linkage mechanism is so far the only issue.
Good spec, fuel efficient, refined, good off-road performance with M&S tyres.

I live in the Middle East. They are everywhere here for 2 reasons - 1. they are cheap and 2, they are very reliable. Great workhorses. Lots of them used by public authorities too which I always think is a good indicator of their trustworthiness.

Must be different variants. One I was looking at:

111bhp
0-60mph 16.1s

Research also showed reports of real world fuel economy in the low 20's for diesel!

This is great, thanks. The new Hyundai's are actually pretty good (although weirdly no overdrive on the automatic i30 we have at work) but a bit nervous about the slightly earlier cars.

Nonetheless, worth a drive.

Some confusion between Terracan and Tucson maybe?

Just had a ride in one funnily enough. Seemed nice enough if you want something practical.

Isnt it the same as the Kia Sedona underneath?
Just took in a minty 05 Tucson 2.0 petrol, cheap n basic inside but im sure it would do a job.

A Hyundai Tuscon is akin to a Rav4, CRV, X-Trail only cheaper and not so nice to drive. Definitely akin to the "soft-roader" side of the SVU world and a mum's taxi here in Brissie. From what I've heard they're fairly reliable but cheap and basic. Wont get you anywhere off-road as it's 4 wheel drive switches off at something like 30km/h (same as Rav4).

If it was my cash, I'd look at a Forrester or similar.

Its the same as the KIA Sportage (1st gen). The Sedona is a minivan.

I think you'd benefit from comparing what you can get for your cash on autotrader. I'd think the RAV4 would make a bit more sense but depends what you can get at the same money

More suggestions:

Renault Scenic RX4
Any decent MPV - high driving position and plenty of economical choices to choose from. Plenty of room for kids and any furniture you might need to lug about.

Awesome. Not sure on the RX4. Looks like the illegitimate bd child of an MPV and a Rover Streetwise. BUT - ticks just about every single box man could ask for. Never seen one on the road, mind.
