Just received a nice letter from the tax man, but it's at my folks address where I used to live. Even though I sent the self assessment with a change of address.

So the cheque itself has my old address and I'm with a new bank who never had me down at my old address. So no way to prove it is intended for me.

Any way around this? Or do I have to send the cheque back and ask for a change of address?

As I presume the bank will flag up the address when they look at my account to pay it in.

Is the cheque made payable to you?

Why would your current address be an issue?

Quite - not an issue if your name is correct!

Why dont you phone then to advise of your address change?

Okay - looks fairly simple. Name is correct. Address is the old one and I have no I.D with my old address. Will pay it in and see what happens.

Cheers

Where is the address printed on the cheque?

Cheques normally don't have any address shown.

Are you referring to the accompanying tear off letter that came with the cheque attached?

Address is in the cheque. Below my name. I'll see what happens tomorrow. I can see a new cheque taking months.

That is very strange. Normally, cheques do not show the address of the payee.

Maybe it's a new technique being used by HMRC to try and stop the wrong person from banking it - as they now know that banks don't seem to check the names on cheques any more before processing them.

That's what made me start the thread. I've never seen that before either.

I will. Be much easier then this. I received a letter back acknowledging my request. So just have to wait.

It doesn't take that long, as far as I recall. For some reason my former accountant put her own details on my tax return as the place to send post to, and she received a cheque addressed to me. But instead of sending it on to me, she sent it back to the Revenue. And better still, she never even thought to tell me any of this. I only found out about the cheque when I received a tax statement and phoned HMRC to find out what was going on.

It took 3-4 weeks for them to issue a new cheque after I made that phone call.

Sorry if stupid question.....

You're not referring to the "remittance advice" as opposed to the cheque itself are you?

No, the cheque itself. I spoke to them on the phone. Sent it back with instructions of change of address. I received an acknowledgement letter stating that a new cheque would be sent out.
