Sorry if I'm a bit behind the times, but is this available in mid-range new cars now, maybe via the integrated multi-function dashboard touch display? Or will we still be fiddling with our smartphones for a few years to come? I'm just thinking ahead to see if it would be a consideration for my next new car.

AFAIK some of the new Renault dashboards are run on Android, and you can download apps smile

For me it has no appeal.

My iPhone 4S is 18 months old and it's now in the eyes of some junk. It'll be well out of date at 3 years old. Tech dates like milk

My 740i came with a £3500 sat nav system from new. At 10 years old it was so out of date I'd have rather it wasn't there

Which is why I would rather car manufactures just gave us a 7" or 10" slot on the dashboard so I can pop in my own tablet of choice.

But I'm living in la-la land silly

People already pay too little attention to their driving, this is not going to help.

'Sorry I didn't see you, I was watching a kitten video on YouTube' etc.

It won't work while you are driving.

I bought a bezel and relocated the existing aircon controls to allow just that, using a Nexus 7.

More and more cars/head units will support remoting of phone apps or screens to their display as time goes on.

Yeah right. When the E46 was current, there were mods available to enable the TV function to work whilst on the move. Pretty sure there would be the same for other cars, but I was a member of an E46 forum so can only comment definitively on that car.

I'd imagine it would be exactly the same for internet.

Funnily enough the reason I get in my car is to drive somewhere, how much time to do people spend in their cars but not driving?

Sure, but that's for dheads; the same dheads who'll be on the internet on their smartphones anyway.
