Jaguar D-Type: Time for Tea?

How did it not sell with a promo video like this?

The format for today's Time for Tea? will be familiar to anyone that's seen the Porsche 904/6Carrera GTS vid; Cadwell Park, a beautiful historic racer and plenty of noise. And who wouldn't want to see another of those?

The Jaguar D-Type featured here was primed to be the star of RM Auctions London sale. The first long-nose D-Type and a former Jaguar Works car, it entered the auction with an estimate of £5.5-£6.5 million. Despite a prolonged bidding process and some friendly encouragement from those behind the gavel, the highest bid of £4m failed to meet the reserve. Cheap skates.

Still, that presumably means the D-Type is still available so every cloud and all that. Anyone have a few spare pennies for a PH track toy?

Back in the real world, take a minute (94 seconds to be precise) to imagine what it would be like to track a D-Type. The driver here clearly got rather caught up in the moment too, dropping a wheel onto the grass out of a corner. Kudos to that man for the commitment!

See it here

It didn't sell because they thought it was worth 5.5million.

It was advertised as never tracked, one very careful driver smile

Then he must have been wearing Simon Hadfield's helmet.

Beautiful - and the opening picture has got to be a candidate for POTW? IMO not much from the Frankfurt show could match that.

The car is ex-Ecurie Ecosse as well as ex-works & Lord Laidlaw, whose collection it came from, is a Scotsman.

Not sure which in particular leads to the current Saltire though!

Thanks for the link to the video, always good to see a D-Type in action.

However... perhaps one reason it didn't sell was because it was so appallingly badly filmed?

The Jag is a timeless beauty that needs to be appreciated properly. The video was far too far zoomed in, meaning you can't see the beauty of the whole shape. Then the camera is jumping all over the place and cutting between shots hyperactively.

I might sound like an old man here, but the person who buys this will be an older man, and likely have even less tolerance for this kind of nonsense. Small thing perhaps, but the video was a great opportunity to fire people up about the car, and I can't help feeling they're more likely to have got a headache.

Chris Harris doesn't have a huge budget I imagine, but his films are much, much better shot. In fact, if the auction house could just contract CH to do such videos in future, and then post them here, we'd all be winners.

Quite simple why it did not sell - nobody was prepared to spend the reserve price, fabulous vehicle but maybe over valued ?
