Why are there so many roads now that have been resurfaced with stupid fking nannying corrugated tarmac to slow drivers down? They are everywhere!

Oh look - a bend in the road. We'd better make sure drivers slow down! Lets not rely on the fact that they have eyes, and can actually SEE a bend ahead of them, or that they have actually passed a driving test, and can presumably operate a steering wheel. NO! We'll make the road surface corrugated like an outback road, and then the drivers will slow down, as they'll think their fking wheel bearings have instantaneously destroyed themselves!

I drive a quiet car as I am now in my late 40s and want a bit of refinement and protection from the nasty world outside. I don't think that Lexus engineers would have bothered spending hundreds of millions of yen developing noise reducing composite bulkheads, fluid filled engine mounts and exactly linear drivetrain if they'd have known that the local stty council highways department would ruin any chance of enjoying this silence!

Grrr nanny state! It only used to be squealing tarmac in supermarkets that make everyone sound like a boy racer, now it is everywhere! I can see the bends you tts!

Rant over - calm down - a nice cup of tea

You should try driving a 50 year old car with torsion bars/lever arm dampers at the front and leaf springs/lever arm dampers at the back - smooth it isn't.

This is one of the reasons (others being speed humps, potholes, and generally degraded road surfaces) that I consider my old (air-suspended) Range Rover to be a suitable vehicle for present-day driving. A century ago we were sealing road surfaces like crazy; now, we're introducing obstacles and omitting to fix potholes. Great grumpy

It's just the nannying that annoys me. I'm lucky enough to live near Ruthin in North Wales, where there are some great driving roads. The A494 from Loggerheads down the hill into Ruthin is a brilliant road but the bends on it are covered in this ribbed tarmac that is just unpleasant to drive on. The last accident there was in 1996. You'd have to be blind not to know you are driving on a bendy road. What is the point?

I don't have a problem with the strips, but it's the idiot drivers that swerve across the road to try and avoid them that annoys me. mad

OP are you talking about the grippy Tarmac they have on some bends or at black spots or do you mean the big bumpy noisy ridges they sometimes seemingly have made from thick paint at some big roundabouts or on approaches to villages?

It's on normal A roads - sort of ridged tarmac that isn't there for more grip, but to make noise so you slow down. Not the rumble strips in towns near traffic lights. It may be a particularly Welsh affectation!
