Have we done this one yet?

Pertinent facts as I see it:

- Rider gets overtaken by car
- Some time later catches up to car (ish)
- Car turns left at roundabout and comes to a stop
- Rider also turns left and crashes into back of car
- Rider blames driver
- Driver is Premiership footballer
- Driver buggers off
- Chris Hoy picks up twitter campaign to trace driver

Am I the only one thinking that the cyclist should stfu as he's lucky he's not paying for the damage to the car?

If the matter was car + car then the rear car would be at fault, ditto for car + motorbike. Only mitigating circumstance would be why the car stopped after the roundabout.

Assuming the stop was legitimate with the driver having faced on obstruction or pulled to side and indicated the cyclist needs to STFU. If the driver went round the corner and jambed the anchors on for no reason then he's a tt.

Or as reported in the Independent...

Independent Paper said:
Rob Lockhart had been riding through Hale in Trafford last Thursday evening when, he claimed, the driver of a matt-black Audi Q7 braked suddenly in front of him, pulling over to park on double yellow lines.

Mr Lockhart, 38, said the manoeuvre had forced him to slam into the back of the car, causing him bruising to his face and damage to his high-end bicycle.

According to the cyclist’s account, the driver claimed not to have seen him as he left his car to make a cash machine withdrawal. When Mr Lockhart asked him to exchange insurance details, he said the driver declined.

“As he closed the door he laughed at me and said that I wouldn't be able to trace him because of his foreign registration plates,” Mr Lockhart claimed.

The cyclist reported the incident to police but understood they could not trace foreign registered cars for a minor incident.
There are two sides to every story and we have only heard the cyclists account of events etc etc but the word "roundabout" doesnt even appear in the Daily Mail article so your "pertinent facts" appear to be little more than a thinly veiled attempt to turn this into something that it isnt, to rile the cyclists and stir up another anti-cycling thread which is frankly quite pathetic. Personally, I think you should get your "pertinent facts" right before you make yourself look a bit foolish...

My opinion, cyclist wasnt looking where he was going and crashed into the back of an illegally parked car...

Sounds like the cyclist was the dick, and the footballer probably just didnt react well to the cyclist. I have a road bike and am out most weekends....I still really dislike the vast majority of cyclists, or rather, their attitude.

Agreed, but I don't understand why the driver wasn't prepared to swap details.
All the regular comments on this forum about how cyclists should have insurance, and yet here we've got the motorist doing a runner?

Not sure how they could "swap" details, when only one of them had details! Guessing, but suspect cyclist got all uppety despite being the one that cycled into the back of a car - and footballer just didnt respond very well.

Why are all the prissy people hardcore cyclists. It must be hormonal.

Recreational cyclists have a sense or perspective. (or any sense compared to the aforementioned),

Cyclists!! Grrr! I was coming down a country lane on the way home tonight. The lane narrowed (2 cars couldn't have passed each other) there was a cyclist coming the other way so I stopped and let him through. No thanks, just arrogantly came on his way without acknowledgement. tcensoredt
Just down this road, I noticed a cyclist wobbling over to my side, there was space enough for 2 cars to get past so I carried on, he was over my side so I had to slow right down, He went past me and shouted "dicensoredhead" at me through my open window. WTF?

They ought only to pedal their toys indoors. In public spaces many are cyclogically unfit. biggrin

Just to clarify, which one of them do you think didn't have details?

Driver overtakes cyclist.

Spots cash machine
Pulls in and slams on his brakes.

Cyclist left with nowhere to go.

Wind your neck in you bloody codpiece. rolleyes

My opinion is exactly the same as yours in bold!! Jesus wept.

If you read the singeltrack world link it contains a full post by the cyclist. You are indeed correct in one regard which is actually immaterial to the central point - in that the roundabout is not the part of the road they turned left at. They went over a roundabout and turned left at a T-junction. None of which changes the premise of my original post.

Edited to remove a bit of the quote naming the driver smile

If the driver passed him then slammed on and pulled in, I can see that it would be tight to stop completely.

Because cars have expensive/effective brakes and pedal bikes don't. This happened to me recently when a driver decided he wanted to suddenly turn left without indicating. I was doing 20mph but slowed down enough to just hit the side of the car without coming off the bike. I was on a £3K carbon road bike at the time, the car involved in the incident was a 10 year old Almera, luckily no damage was done to my bike but I did put a nice dent in the car. The driver didn't have a clue that i cycling behind him and was very apologetic, and hopefully in future will learn to use his mirrors before making a sudden change in direction.

If he felt that strongly about it he should have kicked him, the footie big girls blouse player would have fallen over covering his face in pain. Whilst he was doing that the cyclist could have gone into his pockets and taken out a few grand to pay for the repairs to his bike...simples

On a little more serious tone I once had this happen to me where I was driving a marked Police car and saw some "ratbags" start to give a "foreign" gentleman a wee bit of a hard time. I parked up (busy road) and put on me blue light and hazards, got out and started to "deal" with the situation.....I had to call for some help as dealing with 2 skin heads when your own, whislt this was going on a stupid university student (female type) decided that watching me get a kicking was a better idea than looking where she was going, and rode into the back of my panda. She fell off, hurt herself, and damaged the bike. Later, when the troops arived, the fighting stopped (Police won 2-0) we had to get an amublance to take her upto the hospital to get her injuries sorted....minor just a little gravel rash and embarrassed....she put it on a bit......must have been studying law/or some other no good left wing pinko useless degree....we also recovered her bike to the nick to prevent it getting nicked....this area of town not good....(see above incident).....she then a few days later came into the nick and presented the boss a bill for the repairs to the bike SHE had crashed into the back of my panda.....bloody cheek.....they agreed to pay the bill "To prevent bad publicity"......and because i had been involved in a "Police vehicle incident involving damage and injury" I was suspended from driving police vehicles for about a month whilst it was investigated....utter pants, I was not even in it at the time but rolling around the footpath with 2 smelly skin heads with bad beer breath ! How do they get away with it! I was ribbed for weeks over that one!

To be fair, in your original post, you mentioned neither of those pieces of opinion.
