I'm after a buyers guide for the above, am interested in buying and before i spend my hard earned £ i want to know what to look out for..

Additionally, will i ever get around the 27mpg i've read on the forums - hit me up with real world figures, please.

The Hatchback you're referring to is not that great to be honest. It's very fast but the handling isn't particularly stand-out, just lots of numb grip and compared to what it replaced isn't the best value for money either.

Search for Subaru EJ25 ring land and then go get a nice EJ20 Impreza instead smile A late 55 plate blobeye or even a WR1 would be a much better steed on your driveway.

MPG is subjective but out of the box 26 to 28 isn't that hard to achieve. I had 28 in my Hawkeye and my current 340bhp 2.0 is returning 30ish.

Id like a hawkeye, but fancied the hatch as my days of wings etc is over i reckon..

I had an '09 STI 330S and now have a '60 Evo X FQ330. Both returned around 23mpg on average. Highest I could get the STI on my commute was 28mpg, but the Evo manages 31-32mpg on the same run. Driving to get those figures is frigging boring...

What to look for? Pistons melting on the Subaru, hence I now own an Evo!!! Honestly, having had both for a prolonged period (2 years for each car), I'd buy the Evo every time. It has it's own issues, but it's just a better car.

Yeah i've already had a VI, it was the most fun i've had in a car, period. Not sure i could cope with the 17-19 mpg i used to get though.

My old STi (2005, mapped and what have you) returned near 30MPG on a sensible run. However, most of the time, when driving it properly, it drank fuel... Therefore, I wouldn't by either an Evo or Impreza if MPG is a serious consideration.

If you are getting an Impreza, then the 2005 STi with the revvy 2.0ltr bullet proof lump plus the wider track and DCCD is the best new age car to get.

To be honest, I tend to use it in manual mode. Auto mode is actually pretty poor. Very arbitrary change points. On part throttle, normal mode changes up at 2000rpm, Sport mode at 4000rpm and S-Sport at the redline! No matter what conditions are or how you're driving. Very annoying. So I use it as an automated manual.

Agreed, had mine (sti with ppp) for over 2years. Its the car for every occasion. Decently quick when you want it to be, economical when you want it to be, family car when you want it to be . Does it all. Full stop.

Looks to do the job..

Had started looking at s3's etc. I think id get the sub > s3 on the fact it uses 'proper' vc 4wd rather than the haldex nonsense.

The S3 uses a Haldex system but is branded as Quattro to fit in with the other cars in their range. A Spec-D will still have the piston issues so factor that in again.

The engine on the 2.5 is still quite reliable. The problems start when you map them to quite high outputs. The 2.0ltr engine is a closed deck, so is fundamentally very strong. In addition, the pistons are forged rather than cast.
