Hi all

Fluoxetine hasn't been working at all for me so gp today asked me to try Sertaline. Does anyone have any good/bad experiences from switching to this?

I have googled Sertaline just looking for any personal experience.

Cheers

I hate Sertraline personally. It made me feel awful.

On, the other hand, I take it and it works well for me, however I didn't swap from Fluoxetine. A few years ago I was prescribed Fluoxetine and didn't enjoy it much at all.

From what i've read so far, haven't got the drugs yet, it sounds like the side effects are a bit more unpleasant especially during the initial period.

Thanks for replies so far - guess I'll just give them a go. If these don't help then I'm finished with the happy pills altogether.

Cheers guys.

I've been on a few, but I find a low dosage of Citalopram the optimum for me.

Oh and sorry, I think it was Venlafaxine that I had issues with - not Sertraline. Sorry for the confusion. It's when I went on an SRNI I had issues. I found Sertraline didn't do too much for me though.

I had Fluoxetine and didn't really get on with it at all. Personally I found Sertraline far more suitable, had no issues and it did the job.

They all have slightly varying affinities for different serotonin and other monoamine receptors.

They will all work slightly differently in different people smile

i have been on all of the others mentioned above and hated the affects they had on me even in small doses. i started Sertraline some time again and found it worked for me. but each person is different.

Ok, have read what's above, am just posting my experiences.

Tried Mirtazapine for quite a long time - ok at first but became less effective. Eventually felt sick and exhausted every day. Stopped it suddenly. (Not a good idea).

Next, Sirtraline low dose, 4 months, very mild lift but really did nothing, but no side effects. (Just stopped when prescription ran out, was ok).

Then Fluoxetine, which was fine at the start but within a couple of weeks I was actually being sick twice a day every day, and was still depressed really mega-time - (this is a depressed experience of such an intensity that when you wake up you don't know if you're a tree or a fish) - absolutely no alcohol involved for months.
I was confused and shaking all the time but obviously can't pinpoint it down to my personal reaction to Fluoxetine.

But . . . .

Latest update - back to Setraline but 100mg/day and expected to rise, 100mg 3-times a day Pregabil (Lyrica) which reduces effects of stress and anxiety, and 7.7mg of Zopiclone (Zimovane) sleeping tabs to allow at least 4 hrs sleep.

It's really really done the trick, am feeling normal again for the first time in about 15 years.

For others suffering the mega depression (you'll know it when you experience it!) - you're not alone.

The only thing I can say is - We each have only one life - try to enjoy it, every day is a gift.

Are these SSRI's?

Sertraline and fluoxetine are SSRIs. I seem to remember that Mirtazapine behaves like one at low doses but starts influencing noradrenaline beyond that (that's what I recall reading when I was on it).

Thanks for your post - glad you have found your med level and it works for you.

Im now on Setraline 100mg a day and these seem to having an effect. Depression is horrible and looking back I've probably been going to long thinking I can get through this without pills. Work relationships now also starting to get a bit better, so that helps.

Thanks again for your post.

Sertraline is an anti-depressant. The thing is when you take it you just feel so lethargic and drowsysleep, you just tend to sleep off depression. There are a lot of good things in life that you can find to lift you out of a depressive state and off those tablets.

Very true bud.

The tabs are just stepping-stones and they're doing what's needed at the moment. Current medication has been suitable for me. Thx for yr post.

Am self-employed tradesman, one-man-business, lots and lots of pressure from 7.30am onwards. It'll all be ok tho smile

Citilopram started a year ago. Didn't work but no side effects for me.

Setraline did nothing to help but started to make me dizzy I went up to 200mg briefly but it still had no effect to speak of, just dizzyness and light headedness. If I'm honest, Setraline seemed to make me more sensitive.

About 2 months ago I went onto Fluoxetine and for the past 6 weeks have had dizzyness, nausea and headaches. I've also had around 6 weeks of diahorea.

The docs have insisted on putting me back onto Citilopram. I tried Amitriptoline. That worked but obviously is a strong drowsy anti depressant.

Having suffered from depression on and off over the years I find this thread really interesting - I started taking fluoxetine again a few months back and found it really difficult to tolerate (nausea and tiredness). I am contemplating starting again but have decided to try exercise first - I always feel much better when I go for a cycle/swim although getting motivated is the problem especially in winter!
