I was expecting that to be rubbish, but actually quite a good plan.

But if they can't get up onto the ship all they are doing is driving 1 inch holes through your massive ship. It's relatively easy to hide from on a big vessel.

would be better off with anvils placed every 20 ft along the side of the deck, wait till pirates are right by the boat then donate an anvil to their cause.
(this may or may not affect the structural stability and watertightness of their boat)
