The car (E92 BMW320d) was reporting low pressure on one corner.

So my dad went to a garage and tried to inflate that tyre. The machine wouldn't put air into tyre.

So he went to a second garage and same again. Then he went to get the tyre changed (nail in tyre it needed replacing).

I suppose my question is; why didn't it inflate. Is there something in the tyre valve that stops it. How do runflats work?

the machines in garages are automatic, if there is no air in the tyre at all they don't detect any pressure so they don't try and inflate, they usually have a flat tyre button, which when you press it make it start blowing air even when nothing is attached

Runflat tires don't go flat they lose pressure. Chances are its a big hole.

Replace the tire.
