Untaxed, Not SORN, Fine, Back Tax ?
Discussion
Hi,
Cousin has been on the phone as she's managed to get herself in a mess.
From what I can tell she let her MOT run out so she couldn't tax her car.
Consequently her tax is 2+ months out of date.
She has received a £40 fine through the post - I think this is for not declaring SORN - she's not clear.
I have now MOT her car and I'm assuming I ought to back tax it for the last 2 months ???
She HAS been driving it throughout.
I'm trying to avoid her getting more fines later but basically she's then admitting to driving a car without tax / MOT... however she will have regularly used motorways so I can't understand why she hasn't had further letters / fines already.

Just tax it from 1st September and be done with it.
But will she later get a fine ?Clearly the DVLA know she has been untaxed and by using motorways they (should) know she's been using the car.
She's in a financial mess which is why she's ignored her tax / MOT I don't want to add to that by getting her another fine.

I think she's bloody lucky not to have been caught. Plod followed me halfway across Dorset (Shaftesbury to Poole so all the way actually) just so he could tell me my MoT was ONE day out of ticket. (I'd done it a couple of weeks early the previous year because of holiday timings, and forgotten to check, which reminds me...) Anyway instead of just telling me to get it done, the bugger read me the riot act about how he could have the car impounded and how I was luck just to get a £60 fine. To add insult I was laughed at by a chap who went by us in an Evo 7. Cousin has been on the phone as she's managed to get herself in a mess.

I think he just wanted to tell his copper-mates he'd stopped a Monaro.

Don't think you can - apart from buying tax in current month
Ya don't say ....

Its well known that if youve forgotten to tax your car or need to tax a new one, you can nip into the PO and tax from now i.e. including all September
I cant find anything that says you cant ask the PO to give you a disc a month further back to include August. Anyone tried it?

This is only a database-matching exercise, that's all. Her use of the motorways - if noticed by anyone - would only be notified to DVLA by the police (assuming there wasn't an "ANPR exercise" in place in which case DVLA would be there clamping her vehicle after it was stopped).
You certainly can back tax (or could)
In the days before SORN I frequently used to skip months as I ran multiple cars, when I went to tax them the P Office staff would push for me top back tax them by several months.
I can't believe her luck either.
OK I'll just tax it from the start of the month.
Cheers

My daughter moved last year and didn't tell the DVLA, fast forward to August this year and I pointed out to her that her tax ran out end of March this year. We taxed it from August 1st but she phoned the DVLA to fess up and she got a bill for £91 which I assume is the £80 fine and one months back tax so I'm not sure if we'll get another bill for 3 more months tax. She'd driven the car all over the country in those months and even been pulled by the BiB at one point and it'd all gone unnoticed. You can't back tax at a PO any more, not sure about a local DVLA office though. In the days before SORN I frequently used to skip months as I ran multiple cars, when I went to tax them the P Office staff would push for me top back tax them by several months.
