Plenty of well maintained cars use no or negligible oil. IMO anything more than a couple of hundred ml per 1000 miles indicates wear. 500ml or more per 1000 miles, significant wear or damage.

Just my opinion.

Does the Gen 2 Cayman use the DFi engine?

now Im concerned.. have done about 2k miles in the 2 months of ownership, checked my oil level yesterday and its dropped from the top bar, down one bar. The car has full OPC service with one owner. Have already spoken to indie specialised dealer i bought the car from and they are being helpful. The owner of the garage is (hopefully) going to give me a call, so that i can get the car checked over locally. They think it maybe a OAS issue if any thing is wrong, what do others think?

It does have the new engine, but without DFI.

I don't want to overstate it, but some of the early gen 2 non DFI engines have been scoring bores, so it's just something to be aware of and get checked out.

It's very rare, so no need to be overly concerned though.

yep its the 2009 2.9l.
not sure what the common faults are on the 2.9l engine?
you read lots of different stories on score boring & AOS failures but these seem to predominately 996/997 issues. I've Hartech are a great bunch of people, is it worth giving them a call, to get there advise as well?

will have to see what the dealer says tomorrow. the car comes with a warranty but its not an OPC warranty. again you read different stories on warranty companies not paying out etc..

Worth me giving Hartech a call? as they are only 30 minutes away from me?

thanks cmoose smile think my best route is see what that the dealer says tomorrow, so will push them to help get the car inspected, think the next step would be to have the car score bore inspection carried out but keeping the dealer in the loop

its the first car i have bought without a OEM warranty for about 8 years or so. think i have learned my lesson on that one rolleyes
hopefully it will turn out to be not much of a concern and an easy fix if something is wrong.

you don't say what the mileage is, my cayman 2.9 had 23000 on it when I bought it in may, I have done just over 5000 miles and the oil level now shows 1 bar down. porsche Exeter say this is quite normal, as is the odd puff of smoke on start up.Apparently the piston rings can move around, and as the engine is a flat 6, if the ring opening is facing downwards, a drop of oil can seep past , and this is what causes the puff of smoke. As someone else said, some engines burn a bit of oil, and some don't.
top it up and then keep a watchful eye on it.
cheers

hi chipper, old bean,
I think that your car is similar to mine, so no problemo, the only thing I have that I'm really glad of is a 2year OPC warranty.
I bought the car from Dick Lovetts in Swindon, but as I live in tavistock , I use Exeter , who are extremely good to deal with, especially Wayne, the service manager, highly recommended.
all the best

ps I've just been out and used launch control for the first time, scary cool

Porsche dealers will say even a litre in a 1000 miles is normal. My 997 used oil at that rate. Since they fitted a new engine it uses none in 3000 miles.

As some have said, no amount of posting will tell you what the bores look like. Since you are a worrier, just drive to Hartech and pay them to check it out.

One bar on the 'gauge' to another is less than 30% of a litre (says in the handbook somewhere), assuming it was at the top of the other bar in the first place. The gauge only reads one bar at a time so if the oil is 50ml over the measurement for 'full' it reads full. If you then use 50ml in the next 2k miles it no longer fulfils the requirement of 'full' and reads one bar down. I really would not worry about it.
If you must, get it warm and level and take a reading then CAREFULLY add small amounts of oil, close up and measure again and see how much it takes. Almost guarantee that it will be less than a third of a litre and even then it proves nothing as you do not know where it was (level that is) to begin with!
They all do that sir - blow smoke on cold start, usually when there is someone around admiring the car - you start it and a puff of smoke ensues. Oggler walks off muttering about nice looking PoS with knackered engine.

I fondly remember that long metal wand called dipstick. Analogue and foolproof.

I had similar angst when I got mine and it appeared to consume oil early in my tenure. Did the above and has never used a drop....... allegedly.
