1974 build dates

I've just bought my second series 3, although this is a lot older than my previous one, being a 1974.
I had thought it might be tax free at some point, but now understand the cut off is for cars built before 1 Jan 1974.
My series 3 was registered 5 May 1974 - does anyone know what the chances are that it might have been manufactured in 1973 and sat around for a while?
I don't mind investing in a British Motor Heritage certificate if there is an outside chance it was built much earlier.

Anything is possible...

...but until you get that certificate, you'll never know (everything else will be just speculation).
