guys
the temp on my S1 has been dropping from 82ish in the summer down to 70 yesterday?
is this likely to be a thermastat issue or has anyone got other sugestions?
cheers

Could be the 'stat - keep an eye on the coolant level and under the oil filler cap as running cool is a sign of HGF

don't let Cuzza's answer get you all upset though - I had the same problem recently and it could have been 1 of 2 things.

1 - Blue temperature sender faulty (£11 for new part!)
2 - Lazy stat - £25 quid but requires some time to fit

I have left number 3 out (HGF) if the above 2 don't cure the problem number 3 is the only real answer !!

Interestingly my cars runs at around 75 and very rarely gets any higher, even on a long journey. Has done this since I bought it. Does this sound too low? Bought just after a full 'C' service from B&C.

Water can corode the contacts which go to the blue temp sensor so some contact cleaner could do the trick.

Get the same on mine - sits at 75 most of the time, then for shoots down to 65, basically all over the place only had it (the car - 111s) 3 days so no idea what the pattern is yet. I took the blue plug off yesterday to take a look and in the process pinged the metal clip down onto the diffuser ( bugger!). To be honest mine looks very very clean so I guess its the stat (there is no mayo under the rocker cover cap - phew). Anyway its in for a 'C' next week so I'll ask em to take a look.

In the meantime I need a new clip.. so I'll have to nip to the scrappy and get one, probably millions about, failing that remove the diffuser plate underneath... or call a Rover dealer. Silly boy should know better .

I think the true temp should be around 83-86 on normal temp. running upto 90+ in traffic and maybe dropping a bit when kicking it down the road.

To be honest, im on my 3rd elise now and before the temp was a big thing. Now..if the oil and coolant looks good then im good.

My latest car runs cool at like 65 but TBH its all over the place. Sometimes its high in the 80's sometimes at 50 and sometimes just blank !! I reckon its the sensor jobbie but im not too bothered unless it really shoots up. In the summer when the weather is hot its more of an issue as there is more chance to overheat but in these conditions if its gonna go...its gonna go. its a k series afterall and HGF is like an eventual occurence.

It goes fast and it starts in the morning.

Good enough for me !!
