T'is a sad day, to be sure.
I turned Polly PS3 on last night, left it at the multiplayer home screen of Black Ops and made a phone call for fifteen minutes.
Came back upstairs and it was off - with the red general hardware failure light blinking away. She's dead, Jim! One of the original 60b fattys, with 4 USB slots. My first one died two days after warranty - YLOD, blu-ray failure - and Play, credit to them, sent me a rebuild with a 3 month warranty.
That was about five years ago, maybe a touch longer. So I'm gutted, especially since:
a) November 29th for PS4
2) GTA V drops through my letterbox today or tomorrow
c) Just bought an amazing headset for BO
4) November 29th for PS4
Really fighting the urge to go and buy a slim, but feel £150 is a waste when £350 gets me a new one in 10 weeks. Though also sickened I can't stick to my original plan of waiting until the price drop for the PS4.
Bye bye, Polly
ETA: No, no real point to this thread. But this is a quiet section of the forum, and I felt the need to vent.

Crooked - I thought of that, but I guess the value of a used PS3 will plummet when the PS4 is released. It's definitely an option, though.
Does anybody have information for midnight openings for PS4 launch? I can only find US store openings, but I'm in London.
It's a bit sad, granted - but it can be fun sometimes, and I've never done it for a console launch.

Repair it, plenty of guides on youtube. Only takes around an hour to do, you will need a heat gun and some thermal paste.
Really easy job
Final result varies though. Mine lasted about 4 months after doing it.Really easy job

Hi, I used a company in Tottenham called PS3 pro when mine went bang, and had excellent service from them. It's much cheaper if you drop it into them, they had mine returned within 3 days & guaranteed for 6 months as well iirc. £35 for a YLOD.
Chances are it's not thermal paste though, as that's more of a gradual overheating problem , might well need a resolder on the mainboard or new graphics chip.
Good luck,

Good luck,
I just checked my local area on Gumtree and found this http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/ps3/1031524410 they obviously hold thier valu emore than the 360's as that one is £50 minus controllers, but hey better than what you were quoted for a brand new slim. Also I have heard that the hard drives are really easy to change over on them

Oh it wont be the paste, you need that for the rebuild. It'll be dry solder joints hence the reason for the heat gun.Chances are it's not thermal paste though, as that's more of a gradual overheating problem , might well need a resolder on the mainboard or new graphics chip.
Good luck,
Thank you all for your comments gents, they're much appreciated.
I was thinking it might be the paste, in which case the Tottenham tip would have been handy, particularly since I'm living relatively close to there at the moment. Knowing that it likely isn't paste is therefore useful, saves me going down a dead end I guess. I'll either repair as AWracing suggests, or buy second hand as many of you have.
Still dead tonight!
