I was filling up this morning on the A4 near Aldermaston and parked behind a Hyundai Sonata (new shape) on Florida plates, which was a somewhat odd thing to see at 0630 on a Monday morning. Who else has seen number plates way away from their registered country?

I saw a monaco registered car in the cotswolds the other day. I have driven down to monaco several times but surprised someone would do it the other way round!

Was there by chance a US Airforce base nearby?

Yeah I've seen a few Monaco cars around Knutsford. Rich people with multiple homes I guess.

Also a lot of American registered cars around air-bases in Norfolk, and that one near Harrogate.

A few that spring to mind, most I think were people doing world tours or long trips:
  • A UK registered bike in Taupo, New Zealand.
  • French registered Land Rover on the Cambodia/Thailand border.
  • German registered Golf in Seattle.
  • Not entirely random, but a Hawaii plated car on the US mainland - that was quite far from home!

I am a licence plate spotter nerd. The rarest I've seen on my travels in the UK have been:

Turkish (didn't see any pittas or strong coffee on the parcel shelf though.)

Finnish (didn't see any dried stinking salted cod on the parcel shelf though.)

and the very best I've ever seen which was near Edinburgh...

Ivory Coast (didn't see any drugged child soldiers on the parcel shelf though.)

I've seen Turkish lorries in the UK and Russian lorries in France. Plenty of Dubai registered cars in London but I doubt they drove all that way!

I was in a shopping centre in Chicago last week and they had an original Mini, rhd, complete with early 90s UK plates (and a 2006 tax disc!) there as some sort of promo. Was going to snap a pic but my phone was helpfully in the hotel room.

I'm amazed at Turkish registered trucks in the UK - may sound stupid but do they really drive all that way? What could they be carrying that's cheaper to bring in a truck from Turkey, than it is to source from the UK?

Ive seen a crunched B reg Aston being repaired in the Aston Martin garage at Waterfront in Cape Town, plus a very tatty phase 1 Renault Megan and a convertible JagXJS. All on uk plates.Import tax is quite high, surely cheaper to buy the car there.
