Had a conversation with my Father in Law yesterday, where he indicated that he's thinking of stopping driving.

Which would be a very brave and sensible step that many old people should think about perhaps?

Anyway, of the 8 people with a full driving licence, (plus 1 with a provisional) only myself would be prepared to make him an offer for his car should he decide to take this step.

Now the question is what is the following worth?:

W reg 2000 13 year old 13,000 mile, 13 oil changes, full dealer service, NEVER been out in the rain, or if there were chance of salt on the road. never been over 60 mph, never been over 3500 rpm, always garaged (if it had been out in the rain, it would have needed to be fully dry and re-waxed before he put it away). No journey less than 10 miles, no journey more than 40 miles.

The only problem is it's a mk4 astra 1.6 16V Club 5 door in Bright Red, alloy wheels came as standard. It's cleaner than a new one, not a blemish, but in my humble opinion not a particularly amazing car, spec is one above hire car I reckon.

It's basically a 6 month old car.

I digress. Given that nobody seems to want it, and it's not my ideal car, I'd happily sell it for him or maybe buy it myself and have an lpg conversion, done.

So what's it really worth in a private sale?

I can't offer any advice on what its worth but someone is going to get a well looked after run around.

My uncle Bill treats all his cars in exactly the same fashion (and his lawn mower!).

good luck with the sale sir.

Not a right lot really. You might get a grand for it if you were lucky. Put it in the garage with that mileage for another 25 years and the classic car boys will be frothing at the gash for it and it will be worth eleventy one million quid

Yeah, store it, for 20 years, so carefully that it's condition stayed the same, I put it in the same context as a low mileage mk1 1.6 4 door cavalier if you found one. Not going to make you rich is it?

I reckon I'll offer him a grand, and run it into the ground for the next 10 years.

Unless I can convince anyone else in his family to buy it off him. I don't want it really, but it would be a shame if nobody got to use it like a normal car.

It's worth whatever someones will pay for it.

As it's not desirable in any way then I'd suggest that it's worth top money for an old Astra-ie not much.

I can't for the life of me see why it's completely unused when it has clearly been used confused

Thread title is more than a little misleading.

Donate it to the Vauxhall Heritage Centre. They'll look after it and plenty of people will appreciate it.

Agreed hehe

The difference between 0 and 13,000 miles is.. well.. a trip halfway round the planet!

Yeah, it is. and? your point ? I mislead you, so you'd read it and offer an opinion.

Should I have used the words "hardly", or "barely"

Not really anything to boast about, a good wragging doesn't do a car any harm.

My mate paid £250 for a T reg 1.4 16v Mk4 Astra last year with 110k on the clock, so this one will certainly be worth at least £500. He does 130 miles in his most days and although it looks and feels it's age, it doesn't miss a beat and there is only little rust on it. It's in that horrible off green colour and surprisingly nippy wink

A car like this is only ever going to be a bargain to the next buyer. A seller will never get loads of money for it. So if you have it off him for a grand and run it for the next ten years, you got yourself some cheap motoring. 10 years is a long time though. Shame it isn't a mk1 or mk2 GTE.

Offer him a grand and keep it in mint condition.
