M3 e90 running costs
Discussion
I've had my E90 M3 since April, so far my running costs have amounted to fuel
This month it's going to need road tax and perhaps 2 front tyres, It has a service package so the service in July was FOC
I used to have a 2006 X5 3.0d and hand on heart the M3 has been cheaper to run than the X5,
Fuel costs are similar, insurance is less on the M3 bizarrely, and the road tax is the same.

Tyres and brakes are obviously pretty pricey, and boy will eat through them on a trackday. I took out the service plan for 1k which will defo save me money on servicing, it's a no brainer if you have the option.
As for fuel, I managed an average 6.4mpg at Bedford Autodrome a couple of weeks back, but equally not too shabby 21mpg on a 3000 mile trip across Europe in the summer. Daily going to and from work is 20-22 and I barely get over 30mph, which still seems ok to me. If you nail it on the road though likely to be somewhere between 14-18mpg.
Worth every penny in my view

£75 fuel gets your about 200 to 240 miles a tank depending on your driving. Annual services for me, last one £650. Tax £490 pa. Not changed tyres yet but I would expect about 6k miles for the rears? Think they are about 250-300each.
All and all, the cars pretty reasonable on running costs for what you get I think.
Oh, and remember to keep some of the Castrol Special M oil as its quite thirsty on that!

+1 to the above really - average 21 mpg - just get a warranty - done 20k more or less trouble free miles in mine - i have noticed it is quite fuel sensitive - always use super unleaded - crap fuel can bring on engine warning light - don't worry you 'll have plenty of opportunities to visit fuel stations..also OEM exhaust mod is a must
Any big horror stories about the v8, I was considering an e46 but from a e90 i felt it may have been a step backwards so have decided to go for an e90 m3.
The e46 seemed to suffer with smg, sub frame cracks and the usual wear and tear front bushes but what about the newer e90 model... Any gotchas?

A few rod bearing failures (mostly in the US IIRC)
Regarding the running costs I would work on a £1 per mile all in, edit that's too high more like 50-60p per mile (servicing/tyres/insurance/petrol/pads/disks/VED) but it all depends on your mileage and of course don't forget the dreaded D word.

Again, I might sound arrogant, but these cars are expensive to run. V8 BMW, cost 60k new when properly specced.
Get in with your eyes WIDE open and a warranty. Engine goes you looking for astronomical sums, DCT issues can be terrible too..
Mine had a few issues in my ownership despite the greatest care i take.. most of taken care under warranty, one happend just out of warranty (had forgotten to renew and if you do then you have cooling period of 30d before you can be covered again.. guess what it happened in the 30d) they contributed towards the issue for 80pct of the cost.
That aside. Budget for fuel, economy is truly TERRIBLE, compared to my 991s it's night and day. Budget for rear tires.. brake parts not too expensive to replace but you might then as well go for some proper items like performance friction rotors and decent pads. They put to shame the BWM OEM stuff.
Other than that the interios i found aged very well. Excellent quality of leather, so if it's scruffy walk away, mine after 30k+ miles was like new.
Services are expensive with BMW, especially b/c the oil it needs is a LOT and also b/c BMW charges you 2x the real px for the stuff. So get the proper one yourself and save some cash. Negotiate the prx upfront before the service by comparing dealers, there can be some significant differences.
My best experience in London area is Sythner Chigwell. Very honest, ok diligent and reaonsably priced.
