Two new car options I looked at today, family run around so nothing terribly exciting. Mileage probably around 15k PA.

Anyway, your collective thoughts...

Option 1 Ford Focus Zetec 1.0 Ecoboost 100ps. £14995

Dealer is offering £2000 deposit allowance, along with a nominal £250 from me.

36x£253.56 and a GMFV of £5500. APR 6.9% Usual renew, return, retain after the 36 months.

Option 2 Vauxhall Astra Energy 1.7CDTI

0% APR and a straight forward 60x£282. No final payment or I can buy a 1.4 petrol for 60x£249

I was quite taken by the Ford, felt really well screwed together and that little 3 pot was a peach. The Astra would probably be a little easier on fuel and had a 6 speed box and cruise, which the Focus lacked. The Astra also has the better warranty.

Another option I will be looking at but have no figures for yet is a Citroen Berlingo Multispace. Cheaper and more practical maybe but obviously alot more utilitarian.

Exciting stuff eh?, but please no silly suggestions of M5s and a fuel fund.

Without breaking out a spreadsheet, I presume they are similar overall costs give or take.

So buy the small hatchback you like the best.

I wouldn't buy a vauxhall with my own money. It'll be worth nothing when you sell it. The focus will be worth a least a few buttons. But as above, why buy brand new?

for the same price as the focus you could have a mondeo from here ->

would seem to meet your needs?

A Ford Focus Edge 1.0 Ecoboost Edge is £12269.15 on Drivethedeal.com.

With this discount I'd advise taking the focus over 24 months as the APR also drops to 4.9% wink

You will then be obliged to keep the car less time and your payments will more than likely work out cheaper p/m despite a shorter term smile

The total cost for the Focus = £17k nearly from the quote you have...

Perhaps, was quoted £10995 for a year old SRI 165PS Astra diesel with 8K on the clock, a diesel Golf at similar money will be 3-4 years old. Surprisingly, I found the Astra not a bad drive, would need to make a few comparisons but I can't see how a Golf would be significantly better.

I'm in no panic to buy but realistically I will need to go diesel sooner rather than later, only looking to go PCP or similar to remove some of the ballache of running older cars.

PCP is normally the most expensive way of financing a car. Can't you just release a bit of money on your mortgage at a very low rate and buy from a broker with a huge discount ?
