Guys
Would be interested in the above - I am 37 with 2 young boys under 3. Am looking at the usual suspects RS4, M5, C63, E63 etc
Went to look at an M5 on Sat and loved it - my friend (and RS4 owner) said it was an old mans car and I was too young !!

Seemed a strange thing to say. What is the 'normal' age bracket for an M5 owner?

Well, despite their target demographic, I'd say it comes down to affordability. Not many "young" people have £70k laying around, but that's the same with any car in that price bracket, I guess.

But rest assured, it's not an old mans car (depending on your definition of old) - I am younger than you by a good few years.

It's no way an old man's car. It's a proper grown-up's car.

I got my e60 m5 when I was 35. Friends of mine bought their new e39 m5s when they were about 31 or 32. I wanted an e39 m5 when I was 32 (but ended up buying an e53 x5 for the wife instead, as the family car).

On the other hand, a couple of years back, I mentioned the possibility of getting an XFR and it was vetoed by family and friends on the basis of it being an old man's car.

I am 27 and was ready to buy one last week until the finance company started making too many demands.

I then went to Mercedes, showed them the same requirments, finance cleared in 20 minutes and deposit put down on a C63 AMG.

I thought the BMW M6 was more 'old man' than the M5 personally.

Oops, i'm possibly gonna tip the demographic then.

I'm 43. Had my E60 M5 when i was 36. I'm no expert but would say the M5 is a car aimed at 30-50yr olds. Naturally funds to purchase & run such cars is a big part of it so this would exclude many in there 20's. Over 50 i'd guess Mercedes & Jag would start to look more appealing.

Had an R35 GT-R a couple of years back & i'd say it's a very similar age demographic as when attending meets/track days, many owners were over 30 with a good many over 40.

Oddly enough my wife (who know's feck all about cars) told me not to proceed with an AMG as she stated i wasn't old enough.

18 when I am driving it

46 when not driving it lol

It's a bit of a nutters car. Unless you are hitting the red line most of the time it's a bit of a waste. If driving normally its just a very good car quick car.

I wonder if that's why there are so many for sale with little mileage. old people buying them, not really using the car to it's potential then finding out they are old lol.

35 - I did think it might be a but old man-ish but I had an M3 at 26 so thought 35 was an acceptable age! With 3 kids it really is the perfect family weapon and I like how subtle it is. i was after a 997 originally but was a little concerned about turning up at a new client's house and possibly creating the wrong impression. The M5 flies under the radar generally although 2 existing clients have clocked it and wanted to go out for a spin. One promptly went out and bought one!

Thanks for all the responses. Can I ask how old your kids are?
The boot space is great, but TBH I dont need a great deal of rear space as boys are so small.
One solution I considered is to get a C63 on a lease deal for 2 yrs, and then get the bigger M5 when boys are 4 and 5

But of all the catalogues I have in the house, its the M5 I keep looking at the most !

Buy the 5 now as they get older they cost loads more. Mine are all up now youngest is 16 but buying all 3 of them cars, supporting 1 at uni and the other petrol for work (trying to keep them the same ) youngest still at school. They always say that a car is the second most expensive thing after a house. No chance kids are lol

Thanks
I was all set on MCB or Singapore Grey but when to a dealer and saw a car that they said over the phone was MCB but actually Silverstone II. I actually really liked the colour - you could see all the lines of the car. Its a weird analogy but it looked like a boxer wearing a £3k suit - respectable on the service but with a real hint of menace!

Wife says whatever colour we get she is choosing the interior and its black due to kids !

I'm 41 ordered my M5 2 weeks ago, I've got 2 boys 8 & 5, and can't wait until Dec when its delivered.
Singapore Grey and Black
I'm driving a 640d, new shape and I do feel like that is an old mans car, but prior to that I had an E92 M3 and I wouldn't get that or similar now as I would probably feel like a boy racer (no offence to anyone just my opinion.... and I did love that car)
F10 M5 is a perfect fit right now

31 when I bought my E39 M5, 37 when I bought my E60 M5.

Great all round car, not so much occasion to it apart from the performance but well built, comfortable and very very fast :-)

39 with a 6 year old and a one year old. I've stuck with 911s for the last 6 years but need a bigger car. I would imagine a lot of M5 owners are in the same position.

If I didn't need 4/5 seats my choice of car would get a lot more exciting/difficult.

Thanks - at what age do you think the smaller car (like an M3/911) becomes too small for little ones?

Did you just imply that the New M5 is boring you. LoL

M5s are great, but they can never be as much fun as a two seater. They are as much fun as you can have in a five seater.

Depends what you're using it for. I wouldn't want to do any really long journeys with the kids in the 911: they're now 8 and 10. They're fine for an hour or so, but then can't wait to get out of the car.
