PS4 Pre order - Game Phase 2 - Anyone else?

I had a ps$ pre-ordered through Amazon for a while, however after plans to actually save to buy a house as nothing rentable was appearing up here after some 6 months of searching.
However we lucked into a great flat for less than we were budgeting for so I now had ability to buy shiny things again so I went to GAME to pre-order a ps4.
I paid my £20 but was told I am now in Phase 2, meaning anyone ordering after august 8th cannot be guaranteed a console on release day.
When I asked the girl if that meant I would be looking at something like the next delivery in say a week later or would it be after Christmas she didn't know but said I would be texted if one is available for me...even though they didn't take my mob number....
My plan may be now to take off the 29th and do a midnight opening at my local Tesco (its in a small ish town so they may have a few copies and the que may be less than 100.
If that doesn't get one plan is then to go into town early on the Friday and just try each shop in turn and see if I can luck into one.
I do find this a bit daft though, would it not be better to say pre order stuff is a set amount then say 2 weeks later the next release stage comes out but no bundles etc. Surely Sony must be chunking out PS4's as not having any stock come Christmas week to sell would be a pretty daft business move.
But tbf its not as if games companies don't have form with this with the xbox 360 and ps3 releases being something similar
