Hooning could become illegal
Oz state reckons it's anti-social
Is ho
oning about to become illegal in Oz? According to the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC), recently announced plans to legislate to black-list anti-social drivers will fail and tie up police resources. They could become law within months.
The laws target anti-social driving and offences such as excess noise, illegal street-racing, burn-outs, and refusal to leave a public place. The VACC on the other hand reckons that the government should look into providing safe areas for motorists who want to be a "bit of a lair", and that new laws could become an excuse to demonise young people.
Instead, the VACC said, any proposed legislation should focus on eliminating the dangers of drag racing, burn-outs, doughnuts and other 'risk-taking behaviours'. "Cars are a celebrated part of our culture", said VACC spokesman David Russell.
Other Australian states that have adopted similar laws include New South Wales, where over 2,000 offenders' cars have been seized, and Queensland: 1,400 cars.
The UK government has yet to pronounce on the issue but you don't have to work too hard to figure out what the current, highly illiberal regime would say...
One would think that existing traffic laws would be enough of a deterrent, if properly enforced. However, the threat of impoundment may be exactly what certain [young] drivers need.
Having said that, I can also see where this would give the 'authorities' another excuse to hassle those who are doing no harm (except to their own vehicles)...

Stepping onto a downwards escalator carries a degree of risk to oneself and all the people further down.
As is falling backwards from an upwards travelling one
you are being metaphorical aren't you

The very act of breathing can be risky... Remember to renew your breathing licenses, else you air priveledges might be taken away, your lungs parked in an impound lot!
But I thought it was already.
All of this in the UK is already covered by existing legislation. But give Tony a chance to crack down on the evil motorists and he will grab it with both hands.
Also did anybody notice on TV the other day they were reporting that a teenager on a skateboard was murdered by a motorist (not in his car). They didn't mention his job or anything else, just that the killer was a motorist.
I reckon next thing we know Herbet Austin, Henry Ford et al will be rated with Hitler and Napolean.

Indeed. Seeing as though living is such a risky business, I guess the best plan for us all would be never to get out of bed, and slowly waste away. Anything else will, at some point in the future, be regulated heavily and/or require insurance.

If you believe the old fogies in Bournemouth, it's the skateboarders and cyclists who are psycopathic murderers intent on running people over.
Sometime soon, it will be illegal to even think about dangerous activities, which will then remove the possibility of legislating against them (as the lawyers will have to imprison themselves for thinking about legislating against it).

With independent thrillseeking outlawed, the only approved outlets for adrenaline junkies would be military and police forces. Exciting to bash skulls from behind a badge, or to cause remote explosions 'in the name of your country', using shells coated in depleted uranium (which will turn to a fine radioactive dust and be inhaled by everyone around, including yourself)...
Oh yeah -- around here, police can drive pretty much however they want, breaking every traffic law we have, regardless of whether there is an actual need to get somewhere more quickly. Hoons in uniform -- the real threat?
