Having read all the tales of woe about DVLA it was with some trepidation that I posted off my V5C with the requisite forms to get my personalised plate assigned to my car. Today, two weeks to the day after posting off the requisite bits and pieces, I received back the revised tax disc, revised MoT certificate and the revised V5C . . . . . . . . and they are all correct! Well done DVLA.

I read a thread about how bad they were on here a few days ago, but I think they were mostly frustrations that dealers have to suffer.

Every time I've used the DVLA to tax my car online or change my address they have been great

So from my personal experience they have been kind to me, but im sure not to others

Valid points were made though, why do we have tax discs at all why not have a computer database like insurance. Why do they accept cheques and promises of your daughters hand in marriage as their only currency?

Outdated system that does need a sharp kick in the ass for sure, but my experiences have been good from a reliability point of view

I'm waiting for a retention, it's only been a week so far, hope it's as quick as yours!

That's not good, have you spoke to your dealer? Virtually all of ours have arrived within 1-3 days of registration.

Bought a car on the 6th. Still no V5. Need it by the 20th for a residents' parking permit. Or else I pay per day.

I used DVLA in Manchester several weeks back to take a plate of one and transfer that one straight over to the M3 and then put a plate that's been on retention on to the car that I'd taken it off in one transaction.

I thought this was going to be a mission and a lengthy afternoon spent in the offices!!! Job done in 9 mins on Wednesday lunchtime and the tax discs for both cars turned up Friday morning!! Result and to top it off the log books turned up the following Wednesday.

I was impressed, thank you DVLA!!

My wife had to renew her photo driving licence which she did online on a Monday and the new licence arrived in the post on the Friday.

Great service.

But why does it have to go off to Swansea, why is it not immediate? To me thats the epitome of bad service.

However I do like the online tax disk renewal

You were lucky, they've caused me all sorts of bother in recent weeks, even more than normal.

Has anyone recently renewed their licence via post? How long did it take?
