what to partner with the M6......
Discussion
A week or two back I bought myself a new shape M6 and I love it. Great car.
I would like to buy another car to run alongside it. Unfortunately I don't have a garage, so the car will be sat on the driveway full time and that needs be taken into consdieration when thinking about the options.
The car needs to be one of two options;
1. Would be nice to have something that I can pop to the supermarket in without fear of leaving it in the carpark to get pranged. Basically, a more everyday car.....railway station dropoff, go to pick up a take-away etc. Something good for short journeys. I dont like tired old cars though, even if they look great value for money, so it would need to be a new/new-ish hot hatch or an older restored hot hatch from the late 80's/early 90's that now feels box fresh again
2. Something which is more sports car like, to complement the GT car I have in the M6. Something perhaps with a soft top, but I'm not totally fussed about that. I also go to Le Mans each year or certainly every other year and I find the drive down much more fun in a sports car than a GT car. Again it would need to be something that could sit outside all year if required, so not sure Italian is the way to go and I also would like either something new/new-ish as before
Budgets;
Option 1 - to £15K
Option 2 - to £40K
Thoughts?

An Elise would be a good option for 2. Very little steel so no rust worries leaving it outside; simple cheap maintenance; small engines which warm up quickly for short trips; 40mpg; very little depreciation; and one of the best chassis of the modern era.
The Ginetta G40 would be another interesting option.

Seriously, you can't find anything with a £15-40k budget??
Seemingly the larger your budget, the more incapable of making independent decisions you become.1) telling people you've got spare cash.
2) desperately needing help because you don't know anything about cars other than somehow knowing how much your new one costs.
3) having an interesting chat about options and gently trolling it by drip feeding new bits of information until the obvious answer is to buy that mk2 Golf GTi/E36/370Z/S2000 you wanted all along.
I suppose there might be a 4th type, but I don't remember ever seeing one.

There are several companies who will rebuild a 205 GTi or a 306 GTi6 to a very high standard.Personally - having once bought a perfectly decent 1.9 GTi for £900 - I'm always amazed at the number of examples going for £5k+ these days, but I daresay you'd get your money back as they transition to classic status. A good E30 BMW would probably fall in the same category and also well under budget.
Not sure how far £15k takes you in Lancia Delta Integrales these days, but might also be worth a look.
Back on Topic- For all round usability, fun but totally classless (ie. not chavvy) I would go for a Mini Cooper S or FIAT 500 Abarth, wouldn't really be worth spending more than 10k on those though.
OR a restored MK2 Golf GTI 16v/g60/Rallye. Leaving it outside might be sacrilege though
