Need some help - where to next?
Discussion
I've had an odd noise coming from my Spyder for several months.
With the roof off and windows down (as it should be) there's a noise not too dissimilar to having loads of gravel in the tyre tread (there isn't any!)
It manifests itself best at around 30mph in 3rd gear, but I can now hear it all the time there isn't any wind/engine roar.
Noise stops when I depress the clutch, and doesn't appear when stationary, or on tick over - only when moving and in gear.
My OPC have looked at it twice - first time it was dismissed as 'exhaust resonating against walls/tress...'
Second time a techy actually came out with me - of course, the noise wouldn't appear as loud as no the journey there, but he still heard it.
Car gets put on a ramp, into 1st gear and we get under it with the wheels moving.
Techy points out a rather loud clunk every few revolutions coming from the diff - a bit like towels in a washing machine when they drop from the top of the drum.
It's not quite the noise I can hear, but perhaps it manifests itself differently when on the move?
They told me they would send a sound-bite to Porsche (Reading I presume?) and they'll call me Monday.
Monday came and no call.
I wait till Thursday only to be told along the lines that they haven't heard back from Porsche, but that if Porsche don't know what the problem is they wouldn't want to start taking things apart incase it makes them worse/doesn't cure issue....
My enjoyment of driving the car is diminishing .
It's now nearly 3 weeks since the car was on the ramp.
Nothing is happening.
What do I do now?
Thanks.

Thanks for the above replies chaps - an indi may have to be my next option...
So, OPC call me today.
Apparently Reading have now heard a similar noise on two other Spyders, can't put their finger on what the actuall noise is, so can't/won't fix it.
Irrespective of it happening on 3 Spyders it appears to not be enough to warrant further investigation.
It's been suggested that the noise may be perfectly within the parameters of 'noiseness', and that now I've heard it it seems worse....
I firmly believe this is a clutch related issue, but have also been told that if that's the case then the warranty most likely wont cover it as it would be deemed as wear and tear item., (at 10k miles).
I could pay for my own investigation and have been told for them to drop the clutch just to look it'll cost me around £800.
I'm loathe to go to an Indy and forfeit the 10 months warranty that's left and end up paying for something I think I really shouldn't have to.

I sort of understand their view point - if they don't know what it is they can't fix it.
What's irking me more though, is the fact that even though 3 Spyders are known to have an issue, they won't even investigate it further until '....it gets louder/more pronounced....'
At a loss what to do.
Once I know that noise is present I focus on it all the time, to the extent I don't want to take the car out.
May as well trade it in.
Had a similar issue on the Alpina - slight noise from the steering column so happened to mention it to the service dept at Sytners just in passing.
They replaced the steering column under warranty without further investigation and without any hassle.

I'd be suggesting to your OPC that you'll drop the car off, pick up the loan car and you'll have your car back when they've fixed it.
Bert
Surely this?Bert
There's nothing mechanically unique about the Spyder - surely it's a fault that could affect any 987.2?
I also don't yet want to sour the decent relationship I have with them.
Rob, my thoughts exactly, although I've a feeling the fact we have the rear diff as standard takes us up a level

Next time you have your roof off and windows down, drive at 30 mph, 3rd/4th gear, take foot of the gas and have a listen will you?

Have you got a sound clip?
Also does it happen when cornering?
Do you find it more if you're doing a tight turn up a multi storey car park ramp etc.?
No, no and no.Also does it happen when cornering?

Does it all the time.
Obviously the faster one goes the less it can be heard due to wind and engine noise.
But where I live is mainly country roads with hedges and so when slowing down to 30 - 40 mph, whatever the gear, the noise can be heard.
The hedgerows help to hear the noise better, but its always there no matter where I'm driving.
As soon as I dip the clutch, it goes away.
Doesn't do it at idle, in gear, out of gear, clutch in or out. Only when on the move.
I've always suspected the clutch release bearing, and someone else (not on here) mentioned throw-out fork(?).
Just how much would it cost Porsche to pop the clutch out to take a look?

Might be worth changing the differential fluid if it's anything like the old m3's and put a some new oil and the required amount of friction modifier in there?
Cheap to do.
Obviously I'm basing this on my m3 knowledge and assume the spyder could be the same...

Yay - the big guns are out!
Just 11k, although this started at around 9-10k ish.

initial thoughts are DMF but doubtful with that mileage unless it's faulty.. DMF's do start to make odd noises & vibrations as they come towards the end of their life but again not really known at that mileage. If the noise goes away when you depress the clutch pedal if it's definitely clutch related and not a differential issue.
