'Play' in steering wheel quick release boss

Like many of you I guess, I have a Momo steering wheel mounted onto a Lifeline quick release steering boss, but it has developed some 'play' in it.

Is it likely to be the boss itself that has worn or the steering column/shaft?

If the issue was within the QR boss, it would be pretty obvious to see by moving the wheel up and down, you'd see it moving.

My suggestion would be the bearing mid-way down the column. Has the car had work done recently? Often they fail for no apparent if the column has been disturbed or removed (for ease of access to another component etc) during maintenance or servicing.

If you mean left/right play then almost certainly it is play in the boss on the steering wheel - TADTS. But worth checking for play in the column clamp between the scuttle and pedal box just in case.

Thanks Gents - I have checked everything is tight and slipped a thin rubber o'ring over the splined shaft and the play has gone now.

Dot punching a few spots on the column splines is another 'play reduction' method. Have never tried this myself though.

the release mechanism in the steering wheel can stick. squirt some wd40 in and make sure it springs back all the way and all the balls go fully in to the grooves

I had a bit of forward/back play on qr wheel during my build and after lots of head scratching and similar concern about missing bits, discovered i needed to simply adjust the column (bolt just behind footbox) to present a few more mm of the splined column back out of dash - gave the boss the clearance it needed to bite properly.
