....as the title suggests, the centre box on my 997 RS.2 exhaust split recently. It was on the rear of the box where it's faces up to the back of the engine. I suspect it's been on its way out for a while, but a few weeks ago it when winding the engine up beyond 4.5k revs it got really noisy! The splits are clearly shown in the pici and I've had a new box fitted.

The noise from the new box is different from the old one in that its more hard edged, raspy, racey, this is why I think it's been a gradual failing of the old one, I got used to the old sound. It may well be wishful thinking but the car seems a bit quicker, responsive, urgent with the new box on. Is this possible, was the old box bleeding a bit of power? Or as I think, am I imagining it, or not????

Oh and thank God for the warranty biggrin

Well, this is an interesting thread.

3 months ago the rear box on my Gen 2 RS was replaced under extended warranty with exactly the same "noisy at 4,500" symptoms. The mileage was 8,900.

And then a couple of weeks ago a friend who also has a 3.8RS also had his back box split wide open. By coincidence (?) the mileage was 8,900!

So, by my count that's 6 I now know of from the roughly 60 UK cars with this fault.

Any more out there?

Interesting development...Not noticed anything on mine, but will certainly have a poke around next time it's up on a ramp...I'm on approx 7k.

Titanium Box on the 97.2 RS is an Akrapovic part. Not impressive considering the rep they have and the price they charge!

Put the new one one the shelf and try an x pipe? Best mod ever for the GT3 smile

Really??? When I was at DN8 earlier this year the Akrapovic sales guy, at Darren's briefing, was trying to get me to buy one of their systems. Strange, if the RS already has one fitted, well the back box???

Not the whole system specifically the back box. Had a mate talking to an Akrapovic guy about this and he stated there was already a partial Akra system on the RS as stock. i.e. the titanium bit.

They do a less restrictive one too though and the rest of the exhaust (at 9 big ones )

Personally I reckon they're well overpriced. The GT3s system lends itself very well to an x-pipe type mod and you get great results for a fraction of an Akrapovic system.

I seem to recall the one he was trying to get me into was about 9/10k eek he never mentioned the stock back box was Akro tho ???

I've heard good things about the x-pipe, thing is I'm bksed with the warranty! frown

Warranty renewal maybe but a claim....unlikely but i suppose technically possible . Life's too short to let Porsche boss you about and the sound is too good:-) its a couple of hours to swap out.
