Come across a bizzar chap for the second time and thought I would share.

Its a biker on the a303 between mere-by-pass and sparkford in somerset seen him twice now in last couple of months.

WA08 *** What looks like a honda pan european of similar burgundy red. Guy has white and blue checkers on high viz and bike. He has what looks from a distance to be a police hi viz all police style with white and blue chequers but when you get closer is says POLITE instead of police and please slow down which is a joke as he doesnt.

They guy has a white police style helmet white with black cheque pattern.

Riding pretty poor gets right up your backside and weaves till you move out his way brakes very late. Today he waved me out of his way from behind and for a minute I thought it was police.

Passed me and waved a few more out his way and then he pulled away from me and I got up to 3 figure speed.

Wonder if anyone else had come across him?

there's a bloke down that way somewhere (or near plymouth actually now I come to think) who's well known for it. Got a mental condition - like people that are obsessed with fire engines etc

Plenty of these people about, the Vauxhall Omega brigade (or at least it used to be)

Seen countless White/Grey/Black Omegas/Vectra's/Signums all with strategically placed high-vis jackets and a cheap electronic LED sign off of ebay that spans the rear headrests. They like to sit in the middle lane and then try and scare the bejeezus out of people by quickly accelerating up behind cars that pass "too quickly" in the outside lane.

Seen these people on the M1, M25, M6 and even the A1(M)

Usually people with small genitalia who have some sort of power problem

I seem to remember some horse riders getting into trouble for wearing those.

Sad , I'd love to be driving a £150 dog egg and brake test the tt and wait for the real police to turn up. I've seen a few of these blends where I live, they are probably called Norman or something.

There's a similar guy I see most mornings on the southbound M1 near Northampton - white Pan Euro RY54 NFC.

He does the weaving around and waving in the mirrors thing, but the real giveaway that he's not a plod biker is the fact that he'll quite happily filter between traffic that's already moving at 70-80mph. Seen far too many near misses involving him already.

Yea the guy is idiot but tempting as it is to brake test it's dangerous driving. He didn't like me keeping pace with him riding got even more irratic, can't seeing living long like that 100mph right up someone's tail and very hard braking he will come unstuck one day.

Also I have known some bikers that have pissed the wrong car driver off like you have said and they haven't come off well. Car is a big metal box a bike isn't.

Did you really just suggest brake testing a motorbike? Because potentially killing the chap seems a tad harsh.

EQUINE CLOTHING THAT CLOSELY RESEMBLES POLICE UNIFORM
To The British Horse Society:
I write as the national lead for mounted policing within the United Kingdom in order to clarify the position with regard to equine clothing that closely resembles police uniform. As an influential and respected publication serving the equestrian community, I thought it might be helpful if I set out the legal position from a policing perspective to assist your readers and prevent any misunderstanding.
Over recent months a number of examples of high visibility equine apparel have been brought to my attention. These articles have caused concern to the police on the grounds that individuals wearing them are likely to be mistaken for being a police officer due to the design closely resembling police uniform. I have therefore sought advice on the legality of these designs, which has identified the following as the three main characteristics of police high visibility uniform:
Wording – police high visibility clothing typically has POLICE printed as a contrasting block of letters prominently displayed to the rear and/or front.
Colour – police high visibility uniform is universally yellow.
Chequered Banding – police high visibility clothing commonly uses blue/silver chequered banding, this colour being standardised by international convention.
The conclusion of these enquiries is that any item of clothing that has been manufactured to match these characteristics of police uniform is at risk of contravening legislation, namely Section 90 Police Act 1996. The ultimate decision about the legitimacy of any individual product is yet to be defined conclusively by any court, but the legal standard as enacted is an objective measure of whether the clothing worn by an individual, and/or their horse, would give the impression that that rider is a police officer when they are not. As such, any wording displayed on clothing which is similar in appearance to ‘POLICE’ (i.e. in a shape, format or font used on police uniform), even if is spelt differently, would leave the wearer at risk of breaching the law, particularly if the other characteristics are present.
It is apparent that this issue has been subject to considerable debate through equine forums and I wish therefore to clarify the position from the police’s perspective for your readers so that they appreciate the risks associated with wearing such products and/or designs. I would also like to take this opportunity to confirm that whilst the police would support any work to make the roads safer, we do not endorse or recommend any specific high visibility products or manufacturer, nor have we done so.
Yours faithfully,
Rod Hansen, Assistant Chief Constable, ACPO Lead for Mounted Policing

Don't seem to be getting into trouble where I live - I see them coming past my house every day with this nonsense on.

I don't think there is anything illegal about displaying the word POLICE on a item of clothing or vehicle, after all they don't actually own the word its self. I think the problem comes when said items are used to decieve members of the public (i.e. impersonate a police officer) that the problem arises.

I think he's just contradicting the various horsey people (and the manufacturers) who were saying "the police say its fine/approved".

I'd have no qualms at all about reporting a 'police officer' riding recklessly giving the reg. number and location. It would only take a few reports like this and he would be in deep st.
