Flucloxacillin / Metronidazole
Discussion
I am seeing a consultant privately regarding persistent issues with my nipsy.
He is apparently unable to write me a prescription so the procedure is that he tells me what I need and then I relay that to my GP who writes the prescription.
Yesterday evening, the consultant told me that he reckoned I should have a go with a course of antibiotics.
I told him that I had a prescription at home for Flucloxacillin which my GP had given me so I could self diagnose and get started without coming to the surgery.
Consultant said that it’s important that the prescription is also for Metronidazole and it’ll say that.
Prescription reads “Flucloxacillin Capsules 500mg Send <28> capsule – Label ONE QDS”.
Does that mean that I need to get a prescription for an additional course of Metronidazole and take them in parallel?
I know 99%+ of PHers will not be qualified to answer but I’m hoping a doc will see this and help me as my GP surgery isn’t very accessible and I have to write to them.
BTW, I had Phenoxymethylpenicillin in July but had to stop the course due to nausea and squirts.
Thanks,
Eric

You cannot get metronidazole without a prescription.
However, your private consultant should issue you with a private prescription that you then take to a pharmacy to buy the medication.
Thanks - yeah, in hindsight, that would have been easiest (although not cheapest). Too late now as I'm at home with no ready access to either consultant or GP.However, your private consultant should issue you with a private prescription that you then take to a pharmacy to buy the medication.

I don't know the details of your medication. However, in my experience. my Private Consultant just writes a letter to my GP requesting that the GP issue a NHS prescription.

Indeed, this is what's happened before and what I should have done in this instance ...pp

If it has a bearing, metronidazole reacts badly with alcohol - even the smallest amount.
Oh yes, I remember being cautioned about that in the past. Having been warned gravely by everyone in the dispensing chain, I once asked a pharmacist what all the fuss was about. She said it would likely lead to a very bad gastric reaction probably requiring a hospital admission. Not an issue for me I'm pleased to say as I'm currently enjoying an open ended sabbatical away from the demon drink.
Thanks for the reminder though.

Bit late seeing this as i've been on nights and assume from your post date that you'll have completed the course by now but, Fluclox and metronidazole treat different bacteria types and do not have the same cover type.
If your consultant specialist recommended metronidazole and you only have fluclox, get yourself to the GP and get some metronidazole.
