There was a police van hidden on a bridge over the A3 today with tripods set up over three lanes.

Doubled back and had a closer look - what looked like three stage lights on tripods with a camera device mounted beside th middle "light". Suspect it was number plate / tax check but there were no other police cars or bikes within miles so if some scrote was driving without a tax disc and a bogus plate what would they have done?

Waste of time?

Sounds like the ones I thought got me on the A46. They do sound like ANPR. You'll know in about 2 weeks.

From the height / angle I would be surprised if they could actually see any number plates. Any Bib care to comment?

Can only imagine the 'catch' squads were out of sight, another junction, whatever?

Don't know really...only guessing..

On the subject of ANPR units:-

Has anyone got a clue why they're often set up on the A548 into Wilmslow, one of the wealthiest suburbs in the Greater Manchester area, and not in the scrotey city centre areas?

Maybe:-

a) They know they'll catch far, far fewer people, but at least the ones they do catch will be able to afford the fine.

b) They just want an easy life, and can't be bothered with the chase.

Perhaps they're looking at catching the scrotes who drive into the wealthy areas to commit crime..
