Recommend me a good cheese

I enjoy my cheese, I like a nice strong gritty cheddar but also I like a nice smooth brie and the occasional blue. Things such as a stinking bishop can be a bit too much for me though, not sure why just never really hit the spot.

Anyway I'm off to france tomorrow and would like to have a nice chunk of cheese to graze on throughout the week. So come on hit me with them, willing to give any idea a go.

The area will also have an impact on what is available, although there is some commonality.

Tomme de Savoie for a harder, nuttier tasting cheese

Smoked mozzarella/provolone, great for grilling and melting

Selles sur cher for goaty tang

Epoisses de bourgogne is my favourite by miles.

It needs to be kept in a Ziplock bag (preferably two) because it smells, plus it's runny.

For some reason it doesn't taste how it smells. A runny Epoisses, crusty bread and a sunny afternoon is my idea of French heaven.

Comte from Savoie - should be available in most supermarkets. Nice and hard, nutty taste. Try and avoid the ready wrapped ones, they'll need a few days open to mature. Go for the stuff from the cheese counter!

Which, thanks to MrsLT, is exactly what I will be snacking on this evening, with a good glass half btl of Sauternes.

St Andre is magnificent stuff..soft like Brie.

Any unpasteurized triple creme like Pierre Robert or a washed rind like Delices de Bourgoigne.

For a French cheese, it's very good.

I've just had a snack of this on toast, fab stuff, creamy and tangy. I only bought it because it was reduced at some silly price, definitely going on the regular buy list now.
