Just been speaking to a neighbour who has replaced a couple of worn tyres.

He's got a current shape Astra, with 235/40/19.

He's been stung for £215 a corner! On a small family car.

In my 16" shod world, this seems ridiculous.

Is it normal?

After having a quick look on blackcircles.com that does seem about right, sure there are some cheaper ones but they'll likely be rubbish and why would you put up with that just to save £40 a corner?

yes. a 19" tyre is a 19" tyre. Doesnt matter if its on a F430 or a stbox Astra!

19's on an Astra is the reason I guess, although 19's for my 997 Turbo were (marginally) less than that!

I believe they put 20's now on the Insignia.......

Why?

Using your reasoning you were mugged too, as my 18" Pilot SuperSports were £175.

He hasn't mentioned the brand, so would he have been 'mugged' if he's got the 19" version or your F1s for £15/corner more?

If they're runflats then he'd be paying north of £300.

I think it's partly because 235/40/19 is an unpopular size.

If you look at prices for similar tyres in lower profile 235/35/19 size they are about £45 - £50 each cheaper.

99% chance he's not putting a premium performance tyre on his astra? Hence i'm assuming he's paid top money for a middle of the road tyre.

Indeed, if it's a VXR then it is very reasonable to have high performance tyres.

yes

I always go for the smaller wheel option for the better ride quality and cheaper replacements.

Having rubber band tyres on a boggo hatchback is a joke.

I did wonder if it was just a bit of a funny size.

For reference, the ones in the OP were some sort of Continental.

If they went to 16" you'd be looking at 225/55s and tyres half that price. I think you could buy a set of wheels and tyres at that per corner price.

From Camskill:

Conti Sportcontact 3 - 235/40/19 = £203.70
Conti Sportcontact 3 - 235/35/19 = ££158.20

Quite a difference.

The other halfs father needed 2 fronts on his E93 BMW 325 Convertible.

19's, replaced like for like (runflats)

£300 each.

I was flabbergasted.

I didn't say a thing afterwards, any comment I made would quite easily have pissed him off more.

No, sorry, not a VXR just a standard middle of the range motor.

With huge wheels apparently!
