Hello all, need a bit of help choosing some home entertainment stuff.

I am a fairly busy chap, to the extent that I do not own a TV!

But now and again it would be really nice to sit down and watch summat!

So, I thought, I know, I'll buy meself a DVD player... and I start lookin' at what's out there..

I got mindboggled.

So, I'll start with some basic parameters.

I have a pooter that is fairly long in the tooth, but adequate for my needs (I think).

I have a wi-fi connection that gets me anywhere between 12 and 48 Mbps, from a very nice neighbour.

I would like to shop at Argos, because it is convenient, they have shed loads of stuff, I have an Argos card, and my bank gives me 10% cashback.

Not that worried about price, but not expecting to pay the earth, as I'll be a low user, if ya see what I mean. smile

I initially looked at an LG DP432

I have reserved a Sony S1100

Now I'm looking at a Samsung BDF-5600..

..I then thought about some speakers... ...and one review suggests it goes well with a soundbar/subwoofer thingy that's 179 quid!!

Suddenly, instead of spending a few quid on something I think I need, I could be adding a bloody nought to the price, only to get something that's over specced, don't need, nor understand!

Is it really that difficult to sit down and watch a film now and again??

I have a Hanns G monitor with a DVI connector, and my sister is raving about Love Film.

What the hell do I need? Any suggestions greatfully received! biggrin

Dont tit about with DVD players or netflix. Get a £300 PC/laptop with HDMI, put XBMC on it and install 1channel and icefilms. Job jobbed.

I'd be more inclined to get a free/cheap old big telly from Freecycle and a £20 DVD player from Tescos

If you want streaming things from your neighbours wifi then either a cheap Android tablet is a start, or go for a laptop: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5...

Turns out...

...this works! Gotta be careful with 1channel tho, haven't installed it yet 'cos there are warnings about the main link being hijacked, so ya need to be careful.

But Icefilms seems to buffer up well enough for viewing.

Job jobbed indeed!

Fabtastic, cheers for that. thumbup
