This subject has been discussed many times on this forum, with many different opinions. My opinion is get the car you want, as you'll need a crystal ball to predict which will lose (or gain) the most.

IMHO they are as low as they are going for the time-being. It's still a modern Porsche 911 and people will start to realise that again soon and prices will firm up into next summer.

There has been a lot of panic-selling lately because of the new 997 and boxster announcements - this phase will pass soon.

If you're going to buy one I reckon this side of xmas will see the best prices. After that the prices may rise and all the good examples at the bottom end of the price range will be sold, and just the tatty ones remain.

Greig, I'm not so sure.

I think quite a few current 996 owners will get into 997s over the course of time. Currently there is a demand/supply with 997 - there aren't enough of them. Once this stabilises I'm hoping that the prices will gradually fall.

I just can't see the prices firming a la 993. The 993 was the end of an era.

IMHO your choice is about buying for yourself and enjoying the car that you want. As opposed to buying a car that you think you should buy, really for the wrong reasons. Most everyday cars depreciate in some way, so your choice should be about the merits of buying an early 996 against a late 993, the values are similar and you should choose which suits your needs as a car to own and drive!

There are always going to be good and bad cars in this MY`96/97/98 area, be careful with cheaper 996`s also be equally careful with expensive 993`s. Remember that you are at a point where Porsche made the most significant change in the history of the 911 and the cars are really quite different.

So, try them both and see which you prefer as a car to live with and drive. Eventually, all prices of all cars come down, your choice is about buying today, so choose for today!

Good luck
