I'm after something to see me through to around Christmas, despite the short term ownership of the car I'd still like something a big 'nice' (non manual windows etc)

I'll be doing around 800 miles per week but after something that won't give me much trouble and is economical, which for me is usually an easy 35mpg+

A lot of the Volvo/Audi's are very high mileage at this price so I was looking at Mondeo Diesel but here they have common engine problems with the diesels.

Cheers

A 1.8 petrol mondeo should be able to do 35+ mpg.

The diesel is a good car but has potential for big bills.

An S60D5 is the car for that. Don't be put off by the mileage as they run to 300k quite easily.

I've seen this mentioned a few times now, one of Rover's finer cars I'm guessing. Will give them a look.

I'll stick with the petrol then if I went with one, they sounds great on paper, especially the 130.

Do they come without engines? biggrin

These have grown on me, love the build and interior of the Volvo's.

What do you mean?!?

I do similar mileage in an e46 330d - auto - average about 32 mpg - very comfy - haven't been able to bring myself to swap it in over 6 years!

They are easily in budget but 35mpg is a touch ambitious. At 800 miles a week an Aero would have the OP homeless by Christmas smile

If you are o the Mway a lot then something like this should get you near enough 35mpg

Must up in the top ten of most comfortable cruisers ever, brilliant stereo too. I'd avoid the auto box on v70/s60's of this age though, they are a liability.

I was in this position and I thought I was stuffed. I looked at Rover/mg 75/zt but apparently if the clutch hasn't been done after 100k miles that's £1k right there. For £1.5k I doubt many have had the clutch done.

Also looked at D5 Volvos but this really is the cheap end of the market. I looked at VAG cars but wasn't impressed for what I could get for the money.

I'm over the moon with what I've ended up with. I paid £850 for a well loved Peugeot 406 executive 110 Hdi estate that had done 130k miles. It does 50+mpg on the motorway and I've had combined mpg over whole tanks of fuel between 48 and 51. Being the executive it's full leather and all the toys. Some of best money I've spent!

My SAAB 9-3 2.0t Petrol Saloon returns 37mpg+ on my weekly slog to Aberdeen (600 mile round trip) with some spirited driving on some of the better roads. Full leather, aircon, park sensors etc and fold down rear seats if you need the load space.

Small 16 inch alloys makes for cheap tyres, service intervals more than reasonable and somehow easily as comfortable on a long drive as my M5.

Well within your budget.

Thanks again guys, will have a look at each suggestion. Whenever budget diesels are mentioned those Peugeot's seem to come up on top! Will give them a look too.

I was referring more to the price of the Beemers, for 1.5k I'd be looking at first three cars on the first page of autotrader. I'd have expected them to both be nearer the 2.5k mark? Wouldn't mind one though, I was looking at one a few years back and love the build.

If anyone charges you £1000 to do a clutch on a 75/ZT go elsewhere. The only way it should get close to that figure is if they need the DMF doing (which they usually don't).

Any car in this price range is a ticking time bomb to a greater or lesser degree - that's part of the deal. A clutch on a Mondeo, S60 etc. is also expensive.

A petrol, manual, S60 would be my choice ideally a 2003 model year on. I'd prefer a 130k 2003/2004 model to a 80k 2002 myself.

Much underrated cars. £850 is a good price too, any HDI Estate is always in high demand.

Another vote for the S60/V70 here. Lovely car, well built, strong engines and incredibly comfortable biggrin
