Newbie just got a Fuji HS28EXR - any essential bits etc?
Discussion
Firstly please forgive my complete lack of knowledge on cameras etc.
Just treated the wife to a new camera from our local independent, replacing a basis compact digital camera. I know its not a top of the range or newest camera, but it fitted the budget and it had manual zoom, which I liked the idea of.
I got a bag and SD card and a 'filter' to protect the lens. Should I have bought anything else, or is there anything anyone can recommend to a complete novice with no idea? We will mainly use it for pictures of the kids, occasionally for a bit of motorsport photography, just general use

Sell the filter on eBay and put the money towards a spare battery. I presume the SD card is big enough for your needs. Can you get a strap-on flashgun for more flash power and bounce capability?
The filter was only a tenner. This model used 4 AA batteries, so thats an easy one. Can get an external flash if need be, but being completely undeucated about cameras, I have no idea what 'bounce capability' is!broken biscuit said:

OK; re batteries suggest you use good rechargeables to save money, if the voltage is OK.Built-in flash is not only weak but fires straight into people's faces, giving a harsh unflattering light. If you have a big flashgun where the head can be angled upwards, the subject is illuminated not by a small point of light in front, but by a large patch of light from the ceiling. This is a much kinder light, especially for people. If you take a look at my website you'll see the results. Doesn't work in barns or outdoors of course!

Even more reason to chuck it in the bin.Fuji no doubt spent a fair chunk of change putting good glass in the camera to give you the best chance of getting shots with good image quality.
You put cheap glass in front of it and you'll lose image quality.
If you're going to use a lens protector then spend the money on a decent one which will have less impact.
