Getting in touch with previous owners

Has anybody bothered to do this ?
Of all the cars I've sold only once has a new owner written to me to ask about its history and it was painless to reply, answering all their questions via email but how is it best to construct the letter without coming across as a stalker/nuisance ?
I got a pretty comprehensive history file with the car with all MOTs and service invoices from the 3rd owner onwards but nothing from the first 2 owners from late '99 to early 2003 other than stamps in the service book (couldn't even find a name for the original purchaser, only a private Reg that the car was registered to from new).
Got a reply back from the DVLA yesterday so now have the details o the first owner, who seems to be a bit of a Ferrari fan/racer.

It used to be free DVLA service, I did it got copies of the old logbooks.
I sent out SAE got back three out of five replies, one from the first owner in 87 at the same address still. I just said in the letter, I have your old car do you have anything you can tell me or old paperwork. I got back old photos from when the car was new etc.
It all adds to the cars history.

Glad someone has asked this as I was thinking of doing the same but was wondering whether I would come across as a stalker etc!
I've got the names of all the previous owners of my Boxster, they were written in the front of the service book. However Porsche will not provide me with any copy invoices of work done, including substantial warranty work, without the owners consent.
To be honest I feel a bit of a spanner writing to the owners to get their consent to approach Porsche for this information, I don't see what difference it makes as they could easily blank out the name / address of the previous owners.
Anyone had this before & resolved it with Porsche??

I've done it a few times before and so far have been lucky with most responding. I think because of the types of cars they are, the owners have a "car" interest so they don't mind responding.
I've even written to the owners of Japanese cars I've imported and had a reasonable success rate in replies.
