Hello. Sorry for registering to ask a question and not contributing anything first, it does seem a bit cheeky but i'm in dire straits here and know next to nothing about cars and motoring.

Okay, so i'm selling my car a Toyota Yaris vvti 1.3 64 plate, 45k miles, one previous owner blah blah blah bottom line is it's a great little car and I only have to sell it because I have a new job and they demand a car that's no older than 5 years. Gutting.

So, I sold it on Friday and delivered it to the guy yesterday, all done and dusted. Anyway he calls last night not happy because of discrepancies in the MOT mileage, something that i've never bothered to or even thought to check. He brought it back today and I gave him his money back. This is what the MOT history says:

30/10/2009 - 16,144
11/03/2011 - 25,798
25/07/2012 - 67,424
19/09/2013 - 45,873

Glaring error there in 2012, obvious to me that it's human error and they've pressed the 6 key instead of the 3 key, but he says it makes the car unsellable (is that a word?).

Service history:

24/10/2005 - 3,872
31/10/2006 - 7,106
06/04/2010 - 16,585
2011 - No Service
2012 - No Service
16/05/2013 - 42,944

Now, moronically I forgot two services so I can't rely on the service mileage unfortunately. But, if I went and spoke with the garage tomorrow, same garages have done all MOT's, will they recognise their obvious error and correct the mileage? Can they even correct it?

Thanks for any helpful advice! I'm really stuck.

IIRC you can get in touch with VOSA to correct it. I imagine it will be a painful process unless you have someone you know there, but we had a car with a similar issue and it was sorted by the dealer who bought it from us with his pal in VOSA. All above board, just done quicker because he knew the bloke.

Thanks for replying so quickly. Ill go see the garage tomorrow and if I need to ill call VOSA.

37k instead of 67k not only makes sense in terms of human error but 37k would make sense in terms of annual mileage.

If I'm being honest I'd either just 'lose' the mot or see what telling everyone that sees it about the error.

its not as though the cars got great service history and already looks like its been run for a couple of months a year without mots so much so it has one years less mot cert than it should unless its been sorn regularly too.

Its not only the mileage on your MOTs that is odd though. The dates are more than 12 months apart so it at least looks like you're a bit careless with getting it MOT'd each year

If it was me, I would have just told him where you had the car serviced and to speak to them. There is no way I would have handed money back after the car had left, you're way too nice for your own good smile

There is nothing the garage can do & its only come up since the previous mileages are now printed on the mot certificate
Speak directly to vosa they are the only ones that can do anything

So the car hadn't been serviced for 3 years/26k miles?

Unfortunately he cannot just 'lose' the MOT as this mileage will be recorded on the VOSA database that anyone can look up on-line, (this is where our problem was spotted - someone entered 57000 instead of 5700!). I certainly check when I am buying a car. Maybe he will get lucky next time.

As you say though, the history doesn't look spotless so correcting this will help I think.

I don't think he did mention them i think the guy who bought the car did some checks after he bought it, OP went above and beyond giving him his money back, checks should be done before purchasing and if there's a problem then it should be tough luck.

As I have been corrected about the misplacement of an MOT I'd just say be up front about it when asked about service history etc.

If it looks right etc then I am sure someone will buy it, that said I would also expect it to go toward the lower spectrum of its value.

I'm not suggesting for a minute that there is something dodgy, and don't know why anyone would clock a yaris at those miles, but the fact that servicing is missing during the time the MOT mileage was incorrectly recorded would have my suspicions up a bit

To be fair you shouldn't have even given them their money back, once its sold its their problem as long as you didn't lie about it.

You kinda created the problem for yourself by accepting it back.

I would be inclined to just sell it again as I imagine the hassle involved in getting VOSA to change it isn't worth it on what I am guessing is a low value car - the problem with that is now you are aware of the problem you would have to be honest about it if asked, but as proven by the person who bought it from you originally many people on a low value car do not ask those kinds of questions so you may well be ok.

Can't help with the correction, but for your next car make sure you note when the mot is due. One was nearly 5 months over!
I think the fine is now £100 for that.
