Importing a Carrera GT
Discussion
I know this has been discussed on here before so apologies.Am I right in saying that if one is imported from the US then it's liable for VAT but not import duty (because it was manufactured in Europe)? And that from continental Europe as long as the VAT's been paid locally then are there any import costs at all?
Also what is the 'conversion cost' for headlights, speedo and such at Porsche and is that cost any different for a US or European sourced car?
Thanks very much for any help in advance.

20% VAT only.
I think it use to be £15k for the conversion work.
Beware also that if you bring a car in from the EU that is taxes paid and the mileage/kms are under 6,000 that you may have an issue with registering it without paying 20% again. New rule across EU. It has to be 6 months old and over 6,000 miles/kms to be classed as a used car. 2 years old and 1,000kms isn't a used car in their eyes.

I was reading the DVLA or HMRC site last week and IIRC its as follows
You pay 10% duty on the car.
20% VAT on the car and the shipping.
ETA: I cant find the table on duties this time. But the link is below for general info.

I'm pretty sure that VAT applies to the duty too. So for example £1000 cost becomes £1100+VAT = £1320. May not sound like a big difference on £1000 but on a £300,000 CGT it adds up to £6000.You pay 10% duty on the car.

You used to get "Returned Goods Relief" on the import duty part for goods originally manufactured in the EU, but I believe they now have to be under 3 years old to qualify for this.

Thank you..Is the minimum mileage also applicable to a US import do you know?
My relatively limited knowledge suggests that the VAT will always be applicable irrespective of mileage in the case of a US sourced vehicle, because the VAT was never paid on it in the first place.Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
