So, at 11.30am this morning i'm reversing my car out the garage - it's an e92 m3.

I've lived here for 7 years and never complained about anything my neighbours do and i'm on excellent terms with all of them.

I never had a party late at night or done anything that would be intrusive to any of my neighbours - I even had a thread on here about what time I should cut the lawn on a sunday morning to be courteous.

My neighbour opposite has frequently been banging his hammer and uses his drill at 7.00am on Saturday mornings (without closing his garage door) and woke my little boy due to the fact it was over summer and his windows are open and face towards his garage.

Anyhow, 11.30am today i'm reversing my m3 out the garage and the neighbours mentioned above come charging over to my car and open my car door (whilst i was still in gear) and started having a go at me that the car needed fixing and was too loud.

I tried to explain to them that it was a 4.0l V8 and there wasn't much I can do. I didn't say anything apart from the above, but now wish I could have gone back in time to land some of those messages.

Genuinely gobsmacked - i've got a feeling that as a friendly person they thought they could bully me or it's downright jealousy that i've got a new m3 and i'm half their age and achieved stuff on par with them, despite their oxbridge backgrounds.

Seriously feel peeved and waiting for them to come back and have a word - when they play the friggin piano at 11pm at night i've never mentioned it.

Is it worth it, or shall i just ignore them?

Ps Other neighbours have come over to me frequently and talked to me about my cars as they know i'm a petrolhead

Someone comes over and opens your car door whilst you are reversing?

As long as your car meets the legal requirements regarding noise then tell them to get stuffed

If people surrounded my car like that and started having a go at me I might have to disappoint my probation officer!

Strange neighbour smile

Is he over 50? I find people become weird(er) over 50.

Re: the jealousy thing - I find it's only other PetrolHeaders who would get jealous. Most people won't know the difference between an M3 and a 318.

I'd think they are almost certainly having other problems in their life right now and have for some reason taken it out on you.

You could do all sorts of things to 'retaliate' and it would seem 'fair' given the circumstances but I'd try and brush it off and let them see/feel that they SLIGHTLY over reacted to the situation!

That or pop over and say if they have a problem they should say and that coming running over and opening your car door etc is not acceptable.

Not very pistonheads I know but failing this you could always, seduce his wive/mother/teenage daughter, go somewhere at 3am next Sunday, put a dish of coolant down for their cat etc etc

He might be just having a bad day(doesn't excuse his behaviour).

You were the bigger man, had you said more could have made things worse so fair play.

One for the first world problems thread I think.

Ignore them there's no point winding yourself up about it.

Your neighbour wants to be thankful you don't own something with a loud exhaust like a TVR, the E92 M3 is as quiet as a mouse apart from the warm up cycle & that's still pretty quiet in reality & only last seconds.

Your neighbour sounds like a muppet to me, the fact that the V8 M3 is so quiet is about the biggest thing I dislike about it but I could spend a few grand on another exhaust to sort that if I really wanted to.

Invite a few PHers round for a BBQ. A street of exotica might annoy him a bit more smile

Neighbour is a prat, ignore.

I'm a bit juvenile though, so, whilst I wouldn't go so far as to kill his missis and force him to watch me buggering her corpse, I'd still probably go a wee bit out of my way to be rather noisier than normal when he's likely to be within earshot.

Let it slip this time. chalk it up to him not having any bedroom gymnastics for a while and not knowing how else to deal with his frustration! wink

My 2p worth.

Have a good friend who had an issue with his neighbour warming up and cooling down his Impreza, as it recommends in the owners book apparently, after every run.

It wasn't so bad when it was just his weekend car and still on the standard exhaust. but things started getting ridiculous when this guys son started driving the car and being allowed to modify daddy's Impreza as he liked it. The first thing he changed was the exhaust for the biggest bincan he could source, then with him being an unemployed young lad he was out in the car all hours of the day and night.
The final straw for my mate came when the kid decided he and his mates would perform some upgrades to the car outside the house instead of using his garage at the back of the house. God knows what tuning required him to bounce the engine off the limiter continuously for about an hour, but my mate snapped. Much heated words were exchanged between my mate and the group of boys, but it did achieve in him stopping what he was doing that day.

Obviously the little lad reported the bullying to his old man, as he switched from being a pleasant neighbour to a complete dick. He now uses the car at every chance, even popping to the (walking distance) shop in it, still following the warm up/cool down advice.
Things are getting more and more out of had as the family next door are stepping up their noise and abuse, now spilling over to the neighbours the other side to them.

As much as my mate wishes he could have done it differently and simply had a polite word with the father instead of the kid, things could have been so much more civilised/polite.

It's made his life hell these last few months and he's even looking to move because of it.

You could rip out his heart and hold it in front of his face until the last ounce of breath leaves his dying body. Or just ignore it, he's probably got erectile dysfunction.

I dunno, did you reverse it out in a really annoying way? Like leave it running for ages, while you fiddle about with your sat-nav or whatever, cos some people are just annoying lets be honest. Just jump in, reverse out smartly, and drive away.

I'm under 50, by the way.
