I currently drive a RS Clio 172 Cup as a daily. Had it for just over a year now and love it to bits. It will soon be promoted to a weekend/track car so I can scratch an itch I have had for some time. This obviously means that I will need to find another car to use as a daily. I have a 12 mile drive to work each way down an A road, so it doesn't need to be a mile munching barge. It has a few criteria to fill:

1. Cost around 5k
2. Decent power, a sub 8 second 0 - 60 would be nice. I often find myself stuck behind the 45mph brigade so needs to be able to deal with this.
3. Reliable with low-ish running costs. I would rather spend money getting the Clio track ready than keeping my daily on the road!

Also worth bearing in mind:

1. MPG isn't really an issue, though nothing silly.
2. I am only 22 with no family commitments, so not limiting myself to hatchbacks or saloons.
3. Needs to be relatively interesting. I could just by a diesel Golf and be done with it, no thanks!

The only car I can think of right now is an E46 330i/ci, though not sure on the running costs of those.

Any experience or suggestions? Help me PH!

Jaguar XK.

5K will secure an early XK8 coupe with high miles.

Admittedly, this is the lower end of the market where there is a lot of dross. There can be issues with Nikasil lined engines and timing chain tensioners, I believe (like the XJ of the same vintage). It might be better to buy from a specialist or private enthusiast, and do some research beforehand.

Economy is not great but not obscenely low either. They are certainly quick (0-60 in 6.4s and 155mph) and interesting. And they probably won't get any cheaper. In fact I would say that there are worse places to park 5K investment wise.

No Family commitments? Something two seater obviously? Ideally with a ragtop too!

Found it! http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/o...

Or perhaps: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/b...

Although I am a bit shocked to see a Z4@£5k. Have they really dropped into the reaches of the mouthbreathers?

You could get a mint ep3 type r and pocket 1k. Relatively cheap to run and very reliable.

Sorry, are you genuinely suggesting that anyone who spends less than 5k on a car is a "mouth breather"

Lol I didn't mean to offend. I meant 'within range of those types who prefer to linger with their brethren in Supermarket car parks, have a preference for exhaust tips you could lose a Rabbit in and may decide to 'tastefully' modify the car, usually by fitting the biggest wheels they can, lowering it within an inch of it's life and adding some sort of under car lights. Apparently 'it's wikkid Bruv, innit, aieeee' or something.

Besides, aren't we all Company directors?
