I had a CLS 320 CDI so essentially an E class underneath and pretty much the same interior. nice comfortable car, not that economical but then it was a 3l V6, best I ever saw was 40 mpg on a long run. Effortless though, took a while to get the seats just right so they were comfortable. Make sure you find one with the Comand sat nav system, just makes it a nicer place to be.

Mine was 4 years old and had done 116k and drove like a brand new car.

Older w210 has straight 6 3.2 diesel as do earlier w211. Newer ones 2005 or so have a v6 with 7 speed auto?

I'm wary of the v6 having seen an auto fail, and also of port inlet shutoff motor failure.

I have an older s210 (estate) and am very happy with it. Comfortable, economical (not in town), and reliable.

My friend had a 280 CDI W211 (afaik a detuned 320) V6 with the 7 speed auto

Bought at 20k and he did 210k in it as a private hire car, I have seen the receipts for the maintenance over the 4 years he had it, all done at the Mercedes dealer with discounted labour rates, it totaled up to over £24,000 in 4 years he spent there.

Eye watering. It did drive like a new car at 230k when I sold it for him, but it wasn't the most reliable of vehicles

looked at these recently before plumping for a Volvo D5, would have prefered the merc but couldn't get into the must have post 2005 for under £3k frown pre 2005 best avoided from all the advice I had and sourced, test drove a few though and they are a lovely place to park the derriere smile

Volvo seats are far comfier though and the stereo is leagues ahead in terms of sound quality.
