Hello

Looking to buy my first DSLR camera, lucky enough to be going to South Africa next year and really want to take some great photos. Especially wildlife on Safari but also like landscapes. Currently using a Sony HX20V compact and want something that will be an good upgrade on this. (even though I think this is a decent camera).

Any suggestions, looking around £500 ish, but budget flexible for the right thing, if that can get me started.

This is what started me off, except it was New York, and a Tesco point and shoot that caused me to upgrade

I went for a Nikon, mainly because that's what I liked the look, feel and price of in Currys. In SLRs I dont think you'll find much difference in that price range you're looking at, ideally get a body and a couple of lenses as a bundle, your choice as to whether Sony, Nikon, Canon etc - something that will do 18-50mm and 50-200'ish would do

Is there much difference between the 650 and 700D?

What would be the Nikon equivalent to compare to?

I think I'd be favouring a D4 and an 200-400 f/4 AF-S with a TC-17.....

I'm no expert (having asked a pretty similar question very recently) but there is little to no difference between the 2.

I ended up with 700D because the price difference was negligible.

The Nikon equivalent is a D5200.

If you are just looking for an entry level dslr, get a nikon d3200 or a canon t3i. Those are way good enough for just taking vacation picture. I prefer the D3200 though. You can check the stats from here http://www.thehonestreviews.com/video/nikon-d3200-...

To be honest, any new dSLRr or up to 4 years old, including the latest mirrorless cameras over the past 2 years will have minimal difference in final image quality. It's best to go to a store and see what fits best in your hand and how much you like the menu's, button placement, etc within budget.

If you start researching what is best, you'll spend your time in the abyss of camera forums and see people arguing over minimal things.

hehe

That's what I found with my most recent purchase.

I went for a Canon 600D as I already had a couple of Cannon lenses, liked the feel and the flip-out screen has been a real bonus for getting different angles.
