Are the gantry cameras in variable speed limit still active? I have used M25 three or four times in last few weeks and noticed that a lot of people seemed to be driving under the gantries at what seemed to be greater speeds than limit shown with no reaction. I have a GPS device which picks out the gantries with cameras on but people seem to speed under these regardless also. Have they all run out of film now or have the settings been changed? Anyone know?

I used to go under them late at night regularly at speed. I set one camera off once in that time. Just depends which gantry and which lane I reckon.

There was a post on this a few days ago.

IIRC The cameras and film with 500 shots in them and are set to a high speed tolerance.

According to my snooper, the majority of the cameras are always inactive.

However the ones that are active generally seem to be located near exits, which is really frustrating when your accelerating to join the motoray or trying to find a gap to leave and have to keep a constant eye on your speed.

Interesting. Was there a reduced limit on the boards at the time? I thought the cameras were only active when the signs were on (i.e. no cameras when NSL is in force)

I used to go under the camera equipped gantries at around 100 mph late at night when there was no reduced limit in force and never got flashed. However, my brother got done a couple of times when reduced limits were in force, so my understanding was that the cameras were only operational at times of reduced limit.

However, this was a few years ago so things might have changed...

That's been my understanding too and it's always worked for me.

The system has an 800 shot bulk loader of film, not 500.

The system CAN enforce NSL. This was a late alteration to the spec and was working in during development (it wasn't exactly a big change - it was just a case of adding an extra speed limit, which was only a fixed-length array anyway). There is also a flag to enable / disable NSL enforcement. It's been almost a decade since I last looked at the code, so difficult to remember exactly.

Anyway, the bottom line is that the system can enforce NSL, but that doesn't mean that it does in practise.

I recently noticed there are no cameras on any of the gantries east of J10 (A3), but I'm sure there were some installed there previously.

Can anyone confirm?

Funny how, with variable speed limits, they only ever vary them downwards.
